T42P with CAS 3.0 RAM?

#1 Post by jjlists123 » Fri Oct 07, 2005 10:26 pm

I just bought another 1GB stick to upgrade my T42P from 1GB to 2GB total. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the CAS rating on my new chip ;-(

The orignal 1GB chip is CAS 2.5. The new one I bought is CAS 3.
The machine works fine, I've been using it for days, but I am interested in whether the slower CAS 3 is affecting my computing performance.

Should I dump the CAS 3 module and buy the "correct" CAS 2.5 chip?
Will I notice any performance difference?

Desktop - Most of time its minor improvement
Laptop - Yes it is a improvement, most laptops don't ultize the higher FSB and likes lower latency

Are the old RAM and new RAM same speed rating though? It's common to see PC2700 CAS 2.5 and PC3200 CAS 3. PC3200 CAS 3 runs as PC2700 CAS 2.5.

use a soft like rmma or sisoft sandra to retrieve the timings. But don't panic... My ddr2 is cas 4 !!! And both sticks are from ibm. (My father has the same notebook so i bought him a 1gb corsair stick and get his ibm stick...)

jjlists,

Try this website and download the free software. It will tell you everything about your notebook. Another member suggested this software to me and it save me time and headach! Good luck.

Don't do anything, just keep that memory stick.

Instead of 2.5 average CAS (Column Adress strobe) wait cycles at 1.6Ghz it is 3.
So what, you won't notice anything!!

The mainboard uses a VERY relaxed timing anyway, nowhere close to high-speed system.

If you were an overclocker who wants to drive the system up to 2.8Ghz by increasing the FSB, then it will be an issue. But with the IBM boards, running at "cruising" speed, don't worry.
