180 gig hard drive on Thinkpad

#1 Post by jjfcpa » Sun Oct 09, 2005 8:57 pm

Yep, I've got one. Ordered the Ultrabay adapter and a 100 gig hard drive and I've now got an 80 gig primary hard drive and 100 gig 2nd drive. I now have it populated with over 15,000 photos that I can take with me everywhere instead of leaving them on an external hard drive.

one in the drive bay and one each in the two ultra bays..

Bill,

Did you try to set up a software RAID 5 array? RAID 5 in a laptop--now that'd be cool.

software raid in the a31 would be useless, simply because of the bus. only for data integrety purposes would it serve, not performance.

If it had any real performance value, I would have done it a long time ago.

Problem is, the performance is just to low on the system to take advantage of that.

Not sure what the newer T and R series could do though...

You need a minimum of 3 identical-capacity drives to pull off RAID 5. That's the only reason I asked. I hadn't known before that any Thinkpad, past or present, was capable of holding 3 drives without a dock.

That's what I was doing before, but copying to and from the 250 LaCie external hard drive was too slow and I couldn't take it with me. Now, I just leave the 100 gig hard drive in the Utrabay slot all the time and I can have access to my 35 MB of photos anytime I want. It's also much faster.

Is the ultra bay drive access as fast as that of the boot drive. What would be the speed diff between a 7K100 100GB drive in ultrabay slim adapter vs replacing the boot hdd with it?

I have been using a external 2.5" drive with an enclosure all this while to store my photos etal. If the adapter leads to faster speeds, then I will get it.

Anyone knows where to buy an adapter for less money. IBM charges almost 50 bucks for this.

no..
the buss would probably not support that..
though i DID have a customer who was trying a raid in an A series..
several years ago..
never heard whether he was successful or not..

and i agree with the other poster..
best use is for data integrity..

Yep, that's the same thing I have. I use it for a lot more than photos though ;)
