Quicklaunch Disappears After Reboot - 2668Q2U

#1 Post by Rhino » Sun Oct 09, 2005 9:19 pm

The most annoying problem next to the fan...

Everytime I reboot/restart I loose the QUICKLAUNCH portion of my TASKBAR. Not the entire taskbar, only the quicklaunch. So every time I boot the thinkpad I have to right click on the toolbar, uncheck "lock the taskbar", click on "show quicklaunch", then move the icons around, then click on "lock the taskbar" again. Arrgh..

I've found dozens of websites/threads on the topic but can't seem to get this problem fixed. Is this a specific problem with IBM thinkpads? Can anyone help me with my problem?

Appreciate any help :) Thanks!

Offer sympathy, not solution.

I can't offer you a solution but I can sympathize because I am experiencing the exact same problem, eliciting the exact same frustration. I'd love to hear of a permanent solution also. I own a brand new T42. Never experienced this on my previous T30 though.

I have a T42 and do not have this problem. I have seen some Quick Launch problems on my desktop PC for certain users. This leads me to believe that something stored in the user profile is not being saved on log-off or shutdown. JdHurst mentioned deleting the desktop.ini file fixed the problem for him. You could also try downloading and installing UPHClean from microsoft.com. It helps with log-off and shutdown issues. See following thread.

I know this is a long shot and not exactly the same problem, but I've experienced missing Quick Launch icons after installing Google Earth.

For those with the problem, has it always happened or did it start after installing some application software.

It's not a problem with just 2668 Q2U, it's a problem with other Models as well, also some non IBM models too.

I found few solutions, but non of those worked permanently, it fixes this issue for few days and then back to square 1.

First Solution I found was :

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.
Look for 'Name: Userinit'. In that, if you see 'C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,'
Change it to C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe. close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

On My thinkpad value was right. so this didn't apply to me.
so I moved to second solution :

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_Current_User\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer
change the NoSaveSettings value to "0"
Close Regedit/restart the computer/ ensure that the Quick Launch Toolbar is checked or selected via right click on taskbar/toolbar/check quick launch. "DO NOT Check LOCK THE TASKBAR"
Restart the computer a second time!!!

I didn't have NOSaveSettings, so I created a DWORD type Value... it appeared to fix the problem, but after 6 days ... again Quick launch bar is gone.
So I moved to third solution

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer
Change this setting also to NoSaveSettings value to "0"
Close Regedit/restart the computer/ ensure that the Quick Launch Toolbar is checked or selected via right click on taskbar/toolbar/check quick launch. "DO NOT Check LOCK THE TASKBAR"
Restart the computer a second time!!!

Again I didn't have NOSaveSettings so I created a DWORD type Value... it appeared to fix the problem, but after 2 -3 days ... again Quick launch bar is gone

Now I don't know .... what to do ... now some time it display when it rebooted some time it doesn't.

Some one said Soundmax service is messing it up .. I disabled this service but still ...
even I installed OS three timers from IBM Disc Set. (well not for this problem alone but for others as well) .. no luck so far ... you guyz try this and tell me if you are one of those lucky guyz.

Quicklaunch disappears...

My theory on this is that one of the many reasons that this is happening may have to do with Bluetooth services and how they are loaded. Specifically the Bluetooth Tray widget. When it launches, for some weird reason, it changes the properties/resizes the Start Menu and this makes the QuickLaunch section dissappear.

Try this, export the Run keys from your registry for local machine and users and save them.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Then delete the Bluetooth entries. Do the same thing to the short cut that starts Bluetooth in the start menu. Restart and see what happens. If you do not have Bluetooth then your problem must be from somewhere else.

Unfortunately, while I think I know what the problem is, I do not know what its solution is so .....

I wonder if this had something to do with the fact that I deleted my bluetooth places icon from the desktop. I couldn't delete the bluetooth places desktop icon so I went through registry and deleted it that way. I wonder if I somehow upset the quicklaunch settings??
