Question about T42 memory

#1 Post by T42-4WU » Mon Oct 10, 2005 3:45 pm

Hi Thinkpaders..

I checked over IBM website. Memeory on T42 is specified as PC2700, but when I checked Access IBM on my machine, it is PC2100. I don't know which info is correct. I called customer service. They even don't know either. Anybody has the same situation?

My machine is T42 2373 4WU

From

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -57839#mem

This tells you what the machine is capable of supporting i.e. the machine supports memory up to PC2700 but this by definition means that the machine is backward compartible with slower PC2100 memory that is then run at the lower speed. Access IBM is saying PC2100 because this is what is installed. Whats happening is that yoo have PC2100 memory installed in a laptop that can support memory up to PC2700 spec.

This is the detailed specs of T42, not just tells you what the machine is capable of.

T42-4WU, you are right that those are supposed to be the specs of a new T42 that you would get from IBM, but as smugiri stated, unless there is an error with what Access IBM is reporting, your computer has PC2100 memory installed. Perhaps you got the system second hand, or else it arrived from the factory with the wrong memory installed?

I got the machine in a factory sealed box..a brand new one.

Access IBM shows the correct FRU # 31P9833(This is the # for PC2700), but the description is 512MB PC2100 CL2.5 NP DDR SDRAM SODIMM.

Some other members on the forum have reported this same issue, and the general consensus is that it's a typo from IBM. To be sure, you can download and run CPU-Z: http://www.cpuid.com/

If in fact IBM did install a PC2100 on your machine then you should call them up and tell them to send you a PC2700 memory.

I called IBM..they were not sure what memory installed in my machine. I was asked to remove keyboard to check the memory physically by myself.

So I removed and I saw: the FRU # is the right one for PC2700, that is 31P9833.

Thanks for all of you guys!

Just got T42 last week (2378-RTU)- thrilled to be one of the Men with Black - came with 256MB, ordered 512 Corsair from Newegg- works great, recommend without reservation
