Just bought a T43 and not satisfied with Norton installed

#1 Post by quadophile » Thu Oct 13, 2005 5:21 am

I purchased the T43 about 10 days back, exact specs cabe found here

http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/ ... enDocument

I am very annoyed with Norton Anti Virus 2005 as it is not really doing its job properly. I did an active scan with Panda Software and it came up with many viruses especially in my Thunderbird mail inbox. The Norton is cofigured to check incoming mail for viruses but it let the viruses through.

The other problem with Norton as you may all know is that it takes up too many resources and makes the system very slow.

My problem is that I need to use Rescue and Recovery for back-ups but understand it works only in conjuction with Norton, is that so?

I am not new to thinkpads as my two previous laptops were T41 and prior to that T20. I am although new to Rescue and Recovery which I think is an excellent program compared to the one in T41 which was Rapid Restore Ultra, the later is much faster.

How can I retain the Rescue and Recovery and do away with Norton, is that possible?

Thank you for any input you guys can provide.

RnR and Norton anti virus

#2 Post by dg » Thu Oct 13, 2005 5:43 am

Where did you get the idea that RnR only works with Norton?

I downloaded the RnR user guide from
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TVAN-RNRUG

and it doesn't mention Norton anywhere.

I am interested because I intend to change AV when my free 3 month subscription expires (soon).

Not sure why you are using Norton AV. It's universally acknowledged as being a pile of horse [censored].

I use Norton's sister product Symantec AV (corporate version). Can't beat it...

Ditto to all that. First thing I did when i got my T42p was scrape Notron off and put McAfee Corporate on. In general the corporate versions of AV are much better than the consumer versions.

I use R&R all the time and never had an issue with Norton not being there.

Sorry I mentioned in my post that Rapid Restore Ultra is faster but actually I implied that R&R on T43 was faster, the word "later should be replaced with "former"

As to the R&R only working with Norton is concerned I actually was reconfiguring the T41 for my staff worker to whom it has been passed on and while downloading updates I noticed a pop up mentioning that in order to use R&R on T41 I would need to download it and run it with Norton 2004 or 2005 as it would not be compatible with Norton 2003. This message was not clear to me in the sence that it did not mention anything about using other AV so was not sure about it. Hence posted this here.

If I can use R&R with any other AV that would be great so can someone share some info? If I know for sure it would make things much easier for me.

How many people do you need to confirm that R&R has nothing to do with Norton AV?

AGAIN: You may deinstall Norton AV and use other AV software without loosing any possibilities of R&R.

Actually, we're still on 7.1, but that's the product.

My company bought enough licenses to give some out to people who use personal PCs to access the network from home. Smart thinking on their part if you ask me - I get free AV and they get clean machines connecting to their net.

Just wanted to add that I use the free version of AVG 7.0 anti virus and have been pretty happy with it. It scans my outlook email, checks for updates to its virus definition file daily and there are almost always updates which are very small and quick to download even over dialup. Also it doesn't seem to consume much in the way of system resources or cause any other problems.

I think it's pretty amazing a program like this is available for personal use at no cost.

Thanks for the reply.
Version 8.0i has a small nagging problem. After installing itself on a machine, it scans the entire HDD/s which can be time consuming if you have a massive hard drive. If I remember correctly, 7.0 didn't have this problem.

Kaspersky is the best antivirus.

PERIOD.

Its has the best performance, best code base stability, best track record for virus detection.

I'm surprised you guys don't know this. Kaspersky is pretty popular.

Kaspersky is pretty good but McAfee and Symantec are much more savvy when it comes to marketing. :)
