**immediate help required! choice of two computers!**

#1 Post by holr » Thu Oct 13, 2005 9:25 am

Hi!

as the title suggests, I need to make a snap decision. Due to having several problems with my old t41p the nice folks at ibm decided to let me have a t43p as a replacement. however.....

as my t41p was a 14.1" screen, i thought id go for the 14.1" t43p also. seems these are as rare as rocking horse poop. I have already been waiting about 4 weeks for it, and now they call me up and tell me it could be mid-november till i get the 14.1" t43p....

they have just offered me a t43p 15" screen variety (UC3F8UK) which has a 6 cell batt instead of a 9 cell, a 2gig cpu instead of a 1.86 cpu and the 1600x1200 instead of 1400x1050 on the screen.

the only thing hampering me in saying "YES!" is the larger form factor. What do you folks think?

FYI these replacement units are taking a while. I've been going for some time. Despite being "priority", I've been going since 9/23, and still no firm date.

So goodluck, but don't expect things overnight. Apparantly there's some factory issues.

Is the spec for that first graphics card correct? a 128mb x300 chip? or should that be the v3200?

I'm one of those that likes the 14" version more. Weighs about a lb less.

my two cents: personally, i like the smaller form factor. i too debated about this for a few weeks until i saw some nice pics posted here that showed detailed photo's of the 14" v 15". Im a college student that travels around alot, and i bring my laptop to several of my computing classes, so the smaller form factor is a huge bonus. it all depends on what your mobility needs are.

hey thanks for the replies!

I myself prefer the smaller form factor of the 14 inch as well, getting the same performance in a smaller box. But ah! the waiting is driving me crazy.

Seems like the problem why the 14" ones are slow in coming is that they are unpopular (ironically you'd think there would be more). IBM wait for a bunch of orders before going ahead and manufacturing them.

I decided to go with the 15" one. There is little difference in size to be honest, and if it really gets to me, can always sell it on ebay and buy a 14" one ;-)

for grimmster: yes, i think it should be the v3200 graphics card, im assuming a spelling error as checking the machine number on google says a v3200.

For digitalGimpus: im sorry to hear about your wait. I have been waiting almost the same amount of time for the 14" to show up. However, they told me that early november is the next best bet. For such a massive company you think they'd have a couple hanging about the place wouldn't you? lol Good luck with the wait. If you are really after the 14" go for it and dont bottle out like i have after like 4 weeks waiting on promises....

I have confirmed with ibm now that they aren't going to make delivery today, but on a rare move, they are going to deliver to me tomorrow (saterday). a nice touch, as they dont normally deliver saterdays!

I'm supposed to get a call today regarding the status of my system...

apparantly part of the issue is there are 2 inventories/ordering systems. Support and Sales. That's partially involved in the issue. There are 0 in support for the model I choose, and 60 in sales (I called twice and asked sales). So I'm hoping they can now tap sales for a computer.

ooh thats interesting. Because I would have prefered the 14.1" version and they didnt say anything about sales having them...

oh and by the way, they didnt deliver saterday. A day wasted waiting at home waiting for the computer!

i have the t43p now, the 15" one! Nice machine, just a few faults, the fan is always on and its not as small as the 14" t41p i had (obviously). Other than that quite a nice machine.

Yup. I got my T43 as well (15").

The fan is a bit high... but other than that, it's a great computer.

If you do not carry your computer often (more than once a week) around then 15" UXGA is nicer machine to have.
