T42p - insane price (help!)

#1 Post by shuvit » Fri Oct 14, 2005 7:04 pm

I got this new in-box T42p for an insane price i think, 1630 USD.. what du think the problem?

P M 745 (Dothan), 1 GB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 128MB ATI FireGL T2, CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-Burner(slim), Intel PRO 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 9 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro, Danish Version

the guy also gave me the tiny Thinkpad optical mouse (priced for about 20 USD, and a 60 dollar worth Dell bag!)

not to mention, the warranty is vaild until 2008!

i went home and checked the prices on the internet, not less than 2800 dollars! i also checked danish sites and its price is a horrifying 3500 dollars! Whats going on?

I live in Lebanon by the way, where laptops are even a bit over-priced.

Plus, Im nonlebanese, I could get the 10% tax back on the country borders!

i think there is sth wrong in the price? I love it but I still want to know the truth behind this!

any danish people out there? Please help me!!

Sounds like your lucky day, I think it is a great price.
$800 would have been suspicious. Who knows why people sell their things, ever watch Antiques Road Show?

Hi Shuvit,

Can you tell us where exactly you got this price from? Was it a private sale from one person to another? An online computer store? Or e-bay?

If you received the computer already and it works fine and the hardware config is as you expected, then you should consider yourself blessed with a good deal and enjoy the system!

Can someone inform us if there is any procedure necessary to transfer the warranty from one person to the next?

I got the same computer (but banias... so t41p) from ibm's clearance center for about 1400 us$ a while back but it was refurbrished. i don't think there's anything wrong with your t42p, prolly returned or something so they couldn't resell it as 'new'.

My T43p (new) cost only 1500€. It might be hard to believe in these times, but there still are some good people left with honesty :)

well i dont know, it was all very weird, the place looked really flashy and disgusting, playing this awful radio music, but we had to enter u know. So first he showed us these not-so-interesting R series machines, I told him hey dont u have sth more edgy, or Sony? (because i was actually deciding on Sony), he said listen, i have this T42p computer, 1630 dollars, if u find it anywhere else in Lebanon for less than 3000 USD, come let me know and I will give it to you for free!

at that point we were shocked.

he had 4 machines of the same specifications but they were not shown in the store. what would that mean?

anyway so he started praising Thinkpads to convince me to buy etc etc, he even wanted to step over the laptop to show me how great the build is!

at that point i was even more horrified.

anyway, i went back to get the money, the computer and all software were preinstalled, (he even showed me the box and the nylon bags), i checked the bottom of the computer if there were any *refurbished* signs, but no, I dont think so. the only thing that surprized me was the Danish keyboard. u need a while to get used to it but it is alright, i dont mind.

in any case, ive been using the computer for a month now and it is fantastic. Magical performance. Maybe a heating problem but I think it is stupid in the first place to play GTA San Andreas on such machine. All is normal if i dont play hardcore games.

SOMETHING seems amiss..

it might be that he got those from a bankrupt business..
or they are stolen from some shipper..

its hard to say..

do your homework, be sure it is NOT stolen and then you can rest easy..

Shuvit,

I'm not completely sure - are you danish, and live in Lebanon, or are you puzzled why it had a danish keyboard installed, and therefore checked prices in Denmark ?

Check the FRU numbers by IBM on some of the parts. If these are danish this was a danish machine, and the chances that you might get such a thing (compared to an US/English) is incredibly small. Can you ask the salesman why it had a danish keyboard installed ?
Mostly when they give you a lower price that you find shockingly low for a new unit, and aterwards they tell you that you will get it for free if you find it at a lower price anywhere in Lebanon, it sounds a bit odd.
Nonetheless, i think you found a good deal! 8)

well no, im a Jordanian living in Lebanon, but the machine is all Danish, the keyboard, the documentation, the help files, Access IBM, etc etc.

I could even get the 10% tax back so the laptop would be for about 1480$.The model is 2373-GTG, I checked the serial number over the warranty site, and it said " Expiry date: June 2008, Location: DENMARK"

I assume the three year warranty is even more costly right?

The salesman said it is international. I can repair it anywhere I want.

It's probably a laptop bought with a stolen credit card..

#11 Post by adityanag » Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:44 am

I was once offered a $2800 laptop for $800. Brand new, in the box and everything. I got suspicious, and after prodding the seller, he admitted that he used stolen CC numbers to buy the laptops and then sell them to other people for cheap. I didn't buy it..

The salesman must have got the 4 machines from someone like this and is now reselling them. His reluctance to keep them on display, the great deal, the danish machine.. all signs point to this
