Noise never bothered me but I do think that my current T43p IS more quite than my first T43p.

The type of fan used in the machine may be a factor, but you would have to open up one of each kind of T43 to be sure.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

True. I had an R40 before, and the cycling of the fan was distracting.

What the T43 design has done is to implement "variable speed drive" (VSD) for that fan, now common in the HVAC industry. This paradigm slowly adjusts the fan speed according to the heat load. To give you an example, when the fan speed is halved, the fan noise reduces by 20 decibels (my lab data)javascript:emoticon(':D')
javascript:emoticon(':D'). Thus, if a fan ticks alomg constantly at, say 1/2 speed, to remove heat as it forms, the average noise is 17 decibels less as compared to running at full speed for 50% of the time!

Someone else here complained about the T43 fan noise incrasing abruptly when switching to battery power. The control algoritmn has a soft glitch that when power is first applied, the dumb thing rushes to full speed before realizing there is nothing to cool. Back to the drawing board for Lenovo.
