@Milos: Yes, there is a fault in the registry hack as you mentioned:

You have to change all the values in your own existing keys to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{xxxxx any number xxxxxxxxxxxxx}\0000]

"DALRULE_USEOLDPOWERPLAYINTERFACE"=0
"DALRULE_USEOLDPOWERPLAYPROPERTYPAGE"=0
"DALRULE_ENABLESHOWACSLIDER"=1
"DALRULE_ENABLESHOWDCLOWSLIDER"=1"
Good luck, ciao, troubadix

@troubadix: I tried (all relevant looking reg. keys changed to have above given values for those DALRULE keys). Still doesn't show me a PowerPlay panel in the ATI control panel (as shown in a pic in one of the above posts). I tried even to uninstall all the gfx drivers again, run catinstaller to clean again, and reinstalled.. still no cigar.

You mentioned in a previous post above that your package may not yet support my gfx chipset. But.. my card is ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, which is seemingly the same as yours from your above posts. Are there multiple flavors of the ATI Mob Radeon 7500?

Any ideas?

@milos:

no idea at all :( ... may be you have to uninstall your original driver first, but i am thinking of you did.

there are no multiple flavors of the ATI Mob Radeon 7500 but different OEM versions and display resolutions. Everything I tried was on thinkpads...and it works...

As I said: no idea at all :cry:

Keep the upper lip stiff :wink:

Thanks. I did uninstall all previous drivers, and I do have a Thinkpad (A31).

One potential issue is that in fact my ATI Mob Radeon 7500 has 32MB on board in theory (definitely did before), but now is only showing 16MB these days, and had been having some issues (dots on screen, etc.) a few weeks ago, though it's fine now except for the part about showing apparently half the video ram. This was true even before installing the modded driver, so that is not the issue, it's hardware. When I fix that, I'll check again and post if I find a solution.

Hi!

I did some investigation with:

TP A30 with ATI MOBILITY Radeon AGP (0x4C59) 16MB
BIOS BK55.0.0 VR005.000.006.003.........
and

TP X31 with ATI MOBILITY Radeon AGP (0x4C59) 16MB .
BIOS BK55.0.0 VR007.017.007.001..............

On the A30 there was no way get powerplay running, on the X31 it was no problem.

I think there are different version of the chip depending on production date, different BIOS versions and different features. Sorry!

Aah... that could be it. Thanks a lot for looking into it! My card identifies itself as (from the "Adapter" panel on display properties)

ATI MOBILITY Radeon 7500 AGP (Device ID: 0x4C57) 16MB (used to say 32MB, something messed up there)
BIOS BK6.0.0 VR006.006.006.007.009.001.001.001 j (BIOS date: 2004/11/02)

A bit confusing to figure out whether this is an older or newer BIOS.. Since my machine was bought in 2002 and BIOS claims a 2004 date.. But MB was replaced (by another used MB) in 2004, so it's possible.. or could be that the BIOS is upgradable.. hmm. Didn't know they still made A31 MBs in 2004..

Anyway thanks again for the info.

@troubadix: Oooh.. Actually, I see now that both cards you tried (device ID 0x4c59) are ATI MOBILITY RADEON (that's an M6), while the one I have (device 0x4c57) is ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500 (that's an M7). I didn't know the A series could have something other than 7500 or firegl. I compared M6 and M7 settings in your INF files and they seem largely same so no luck there..

But, someone else has apparently asked about this, and found a bit of a kludge solution:
http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=94690

Not sure if that works. I may try it when I have a minute and report back, though it seems a bit of a hack with no explanation. Any thoughts?

Hi Milos,

I actually took the M7 setting for the M6, but there was no effect, so I'm looking forward to your test.

Meanwhile I keep thinking of features restricted by hardware ...

Well, I give up. I tried 2 things.

1) I tried just substituting the M9 software settings during the driver install on the M7 as described here (http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=94690). Nothing. Still no Powerplay panel (like before), NHC still detects Powerplay using Troubadix's driver patch (which it does not with the standard IBM drivers) (same as before), and finally the fact that NHC detects Powerplay seems to make *no* difference since the GPU and memory clocks are always 260MHz/166MHz, regardless of setting and AC/battery operation (also same as before).

Conclusion: the M9 setting made no effect. And, the whole thing is still a bit bizarre to me.

2) I also tried a second A31 motherboard which has a healthy ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB video ram (unlike mine which is supposed to be 32, but in recent times lost 16 and now presents itself as a 16MB card but otherwise works). Using my hard drive that has troubadix's standard driver installed, the new MB correctly reports a 32MB ATI card, but still has no Powerplay panel. I should say that I did *not* uninstall the driver again and reinstall it while running on the second motherboard, but rather used the previous clean driver install (which I had redone to undo trying the M9 trick). The second MB had a slightly older ATI Rad Mob 7500/32 - it's BIOS was BIOS BK6.0.0 VR006.004.006.... (compare to message above).

Conclusion: second, perfectly working ATI Rad Mob 7500/32MB also has no PowerPlay panel, nor does it throttle down the clock when NHC has PowerPlay selected.

And that's the word. I think I give up unless someone shows me that the ATI Rad Mob 7500's do actually work with PowerPlay...

Thanks for any suggestions,

Milos

please, ask any T40 owner.

It's a problem of hardware restrictionin my humble opinion.

troubadix, thanks for all your help trying to solve this! You are probably right that it's a hardware limitation. I didn't realize you had a T40 or that T40s had an ATI 7500 -- your signature says A20p/X31, so I checked their configurations and assumed you tried on a different graphics card as a result. T40s are newer than A31s by about a year, so maybe it's a newer revision of the 7500 they use, or else maybe the configuration of the motherboard matters, and the A31's may not be wired to allow the 7500 to switch clock speeds.. I haven't been able to find an electrical spec sheet (pinout) for the ATI graphics chips online..

Thanks again,

Milos

For reference, troubadix's link is working as of the date of this post. I just downloaded and installed it.

Thanks for posting this, troubadix. I had been looking for a way to enable the ATI Powerplay on AC using Notebook Hardware Control a long time ago, and you've finally provided the solution.

This was installed on a Thinkpad T41 with Radeon 7500. With Powerplay enabled on NHC, the ATI Core and Memory clock drops to 66.94MHz each, resulting in a drop of about 2 degrees on the GPU. That's good news for me since the GPU was the hottest running bit in my T41 and thus most likely to kick the fan speed up.

I still have the doubt if Powerplay lowers even further the GPU temperature compared to the ATiTOOL Utility (i set mine to 70/70), the GPU is cooler, but have read Powerplay also undervolts the GPU so that it's what I want to do.

I applied the registry hack and only changed the first value:
from

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{3CC1BF7C-4A06-40C8-BD99-72C72D96D13F}\0000]
"DALRULE_USEOLDPOWERPLAYINTERFACE"=dword:00000001
to

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{3CC1BF7C-4A06-40C8-BD99-72C72D96D13F}\0000]
"DALRULE_USEOLDPOWERPLAYINTERFACE"=dword:00000000
I've tried the DriverHeaven.net utility using the most recent drivers Lenovo released for the FireGL/Radeon (02-Feb-07), browse to the Driver subfolder, but then a error window comes up:

Code: Select all

Unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately

X31 Vista Driver

#45 Post by normanrich » Wed May 23, 2007 10:40 am

Hi,
Any help would be appreciated. Struggling with Lenovo's now current driver (which appears to be an XP driver), and receive BSODs in ati3.duag.

Attempted to load the 5.3 Catalyst Drivers referenced above.
Control panel installs correctly.
Actual driver setup errors with:
'Setup unable to complete. Try to setup....VGA'
Thanks,
norman rich

I spend a lot of time all over google to find those key and they were here !!! With FireGL, if you do not want to use the Catalyst Control Center, you can download the full driver from IBM (with CCC) and only install the driver witch is in the sub folder C:\Drivers\WIN\DISPLAY\Driver. Run the setup.

Download from AMD the desktop FireGL driver. They still use the old Control Panel. Try to install them, it will fail. Go in the c:\ATI\support\... Cpanel and run the setup. Reboot and it works fine.

From time to time, with Mod.ned, there is some issue with FireGL (Opengl was not working).
