T42 vs. T43 (again...)

#1 Post by frobnitz » Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:07 pm

With the current specials going on, it looks like I can get a T42 or T43 with nearly identical configuration and price. I know there have been reports of problems with heat, noise, and battery life with the T43, but I've also read claims that some of the problems have been somewhat fixed with newer machines. I'm not a gamer, but I like a round of bzflag now and then. Linux compatibility is very important. Extra performance would be nice, but not if it really hurts battery life.

I'm leaning toward the T42 because I'm not convinced the T43 offers anything extra. So the questions are:

1) Are newer T43s still worse than T42s with noise and heat, and are there any other quality concerns?
2) Is the performance difference between a 2.0 GHz T43 a 1.8 GHz T42 that great (it's only about $60 difference)?
3) Is there any other reason I might want to get a T43 over a T42?

Thanks for any info.

For $60 I'd take an extra 200mhz in processor speed plus the higher memory bandwidth (at the cost of a little latency) over the 1.8ghz. I have no heat or noise issues with mine, but I couldn't tell you how a new one now would be.
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400

If someone's primary use is office, acrobat, web browsing, T42 is better due to better battery life. Anything above 1.6Ghz will suffice.

For people who need speed, investing in a T43 might be better as you can get a cheaper processor ... after Intel price cuts, Lenovo dropped the prices a bit on the Sept. models.
