External DVD Burner and/or HDD Firewire Recommendations?

I was wondering if any body has any recomendations for an external DVD burner or HDD to be used with firewire.

Is this setup better than via USB2 (I havent had much success with my 7K60 external drive - constantly getting the "Failed to write" error).

Is firewire the way to go?

I am concerned about my data, and backing up to cd takes a long time indeed.

Any sugestions ?
