New T42 suddenly doesn't turn on

#1 Post by Troels » Wed Oct 19, 2005 12:38 pm

:o

I really need some help here:

I received a practiaclly new T42 2379-DXU, and it booted just fine some hours ago. I got curious and shut the machine off, removed the battery and removed the harddrive by firstly removing the screw and carefully taking it out. I put everything back together.... and didn't think about starting the machine till now two hours later. IT DOESN'T START when pusing the power button, did i do something stupid ? Any tricks etc. ?

First make sure the battery is connected securely. If that doesn't do it, go in and make sure the hard drive is plugged in all the way. Loose connections can cause a lot of problems.

I think the battery is securely connected and fits properly, so does the harddrive. When removing the battery and connecting the power supply the notorious but faint high frequency noise is emitted from the AC in area. When pressing the power button while it is in, the noise suddenly disappears. Laptop does not turn on.
Testing the power supply gives me 16.7V which is within IBM's specs, so apparantly it works ok

When battery is in and AC in connected too, it doesn't boot either.

I did not drop the laptop, or anything else that physically might damage it.

Any further hints or tricks would be very nice. :(

Solution:

1. Remove AC adaptor
2. Remove battery
3. Remove harddrive.
4. Make sure that the two springs holding the harddrive in place isn't bent, and is in fact pressed down when the screw is turned/screwed all the way in.
5. Reseat the battery
6. Insert AC power
7. Machine works again.

8) I was about to panic
