Help i think the cd burner is broken on my t42p!
For some reason the cd burner just won't burn anymore. I keep getting write errors no matter what program i use...i've tried nero, DLA, magic iso and a couple others with no luck. If it turns out its a hardware problem, do you think ibm will let me just send the drive out to get a new one? i can't afford to ship back my entire computer with school going on right now. Any ideas?

If it's a hardware problem, Lenovo will send you a new optical drive. You don't have to send your computer in for repair if the part is customer replaceable (which the optical drive is).
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Is there anyway to test for sure that its a hardware problem besides using multiple program like ive done?K. Eng wrote:If it's a hardware problem, Lenovo will send you a new optical drive. The obvious way is to find someone else with a T4X ThinkPad that will let you test your drive in their ThinkPad. Or just ask them to test it for you.smakdown61 wrote:Is there anyway to test for sure that its a hardware problem besides using multiple program like ive done?
EDIT: The CD/DVD drive is very easy to remove. First using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the System Tray, remove the CD/DVD drive. Next push the tiny lever back under the lower right edge of the drive. Then pull out on tab that popped-out when you pushed back on the lever above, and finally grab the drive and pull it out.

if the laptop is under warranty, just call IBM support and they will send you a replacement and take the broken one

I had the same problem.
If you still have the problem with the new drive, see if it was "remanufactured". If so, call them and request ANOTHER one.
When mine went bust, the remanufactured one they sent was also dead. When I shipped it into EZServ, they replaced the drive with a brand-new one, and it worked.

Update: IBM sent me a remanufactured drive that suprisingly arrived within 24 hours of calling them. I was pretty pleased until that drive just stop working today
my original one that broke just wouldn't burn, this one won't burn or play cds and it makes a grinding noise. I just called ibm again and requested another one, but when i asked if they could ship me a new one the guy said he doesn't know what they ship out he just puts in the order.....im afraid im gonna get another short lived drive. How would i go about getting a brand new one?

Ok so i called up IBM again and requested another drive. I tried to tell the guy that I wanted a new drive this time but he said he has no control over it since he just puts in the order for the part number. 2 days later, wham! they actually sent me a brand new drive yay! It came in an unopened ibm box w/ software and everything. The manufacture date was 9/05 and its revision 201 as opposed to 101 like my old drive. Hopefully this one will last a little longer than a year.
ah the wonders of SERVICEABLE USED PARTS
nice to get a replacement hard drive and notice it was manufactured 2 years ago
