Video driver

#1 Post by akhavan » Mon Jul 05, 2004 2:14 am

Hi,

I have a T41P. Is there any difference between IBM ThinkPad Display Video Driver (Mobility-RADEON/FIREGL Series) for Windows XP

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-41918

and ATI Technologies Inc. FireGL T2-64 / FireGL T2-128 Windows XP / 2000 Display Drivers?

http://mirror.ati.com/support/products/ ... submit.y=9

Which one is better or are they the same?

Thanks

Sepehr

I think IBM's drivers are better because theyre specifically modified for the best compatibility with your Thinkpad. I once tried installing ATI's driver, and I ran into a whole slew of problems....would stick to IBM's drivers for all system components, and perhaps the Critical System Updates from M$.

Akhavan,

The original ATI FireGL driver won't work with your TP. The IBM ATI driver has compatibility issues with games, but you can use the original ATI driver (not the FireGL) and a modder.

How much difference does it make in terms of performance?

don't know about real games, i had none before installing the modded ati driver, but in 3dmark 2001 it was about 30% faster for me ( 6000 to 9300 3dmarks )

the only thing i had to change was a key in the registry, because 1400x1050 wasn't listed as resolution at all, but that's not a problem if you play a little with regedit.

now works like a charm, and with the power saving features you don't get with the omega driver (well, i didn't get them...)

You can also use the Omega driver which already includes the driver (it's not a modder), and as far as I know, it supports 1400x1050.

By the way, what are the optimum settings (stability vs. speed) that you've find using Omega ? for Core & Memory? Currently i have 31725/20925 and it's quite slow!
