Best way to add Bluetooth to T42

#1 Post by blee321 » Fri Oct 21, 2005 6:35 pm

Hi all, I have a T42. Type 2379-R8U.
What is the best way to add bluetooth functionality to my laptop without having to buy an external unit, ie. usb etc. Thanks
Brian

You can buy the BMDC-2 internal card and install it yourself.

ThinkPad Integrated Bluetooth III with 56K Modem (FRU 91P7319)
Bluetooth wireless antenna assembly XGA (FRU 91P6860)

Will requiere you to remove the keyboard bezel and the lcd cover kit, but its not that hard to install.

Is it confirmed that the R8U doesn't come with the antenna already included? The OP might not need to buy that part.

to find out if you got the Bluetooth-Antenna you would have to look under your Modem-Daughtercard. This requires you to remove the Keyboard. Just take a look in the HMM, there you can find exact instructions for removing the keyboard.

If you find a white cable taped under the Modemcard you would just have to swap the Modemcard against a Bluetooth-Modemcard. Should be not to hard.

as I said, not hard to config, and the price will be like $65

good luck!

Bluetooth antenna pics

Look here:

http://www.pbase.com/kenn/t42_bluetooth

for pictures of the integrated bluetooth antenna and bluetooth card.

BTW, it says there that some non-bluetooth Thinkpads do have the antenna and some do not. Upgrading a non-bluetooth equiped Thinkpad will be a major undertaking because the antenna itself is behind the LCD. Not a project for the faint of heart or if voiding your warranty doesn't bother you.

Buy a USB BT device .. and save yourself the hassle and potential warranty issues you could face down the road. If you really want BT on a machine, the only recommended way to get it is buy it configured that way, or add it with PCMCIA/USB.

3COM PCMCIA Bluetooth I got. It does not protrude from the case, plus I did not fancy opening up the laptop.

Hey thanks, how is the performance when you don't expose the antenna?
