I have cpufreq activated and even when I select to run at 600Mhz the fan does the stupid pulsating noise, although the temp drops down to ~30C...

There is a new Embedded Controller Bios on IBM's Web Site

:( ...BUT at the moment it's still linked to the old version from 7/13 (or did someone hack the site :?:)

let's hope the solution for the pulsating fan will turn up soon...

Pulsating has gone. But FAN ist still running all the time, IBM just does not care. The links work now.

BTW: My IBM-Clone battery does not work anymore since version 3.02 :-(...

If you are plugged in the fan should be running unless you are in a freezer. The fan is what keeps your CPU cool ya know.
If you want the fan to stop unplug.

This is totally rubbish. My CPU runs at 600Mhz, no matter if plugged in or not. Temperature is around 38°C. No active cooling is necessary here but FAN still runs. Intel Centrino CPU is capable of handling 100°C ya know...

Well then I guess IBM does it just to piss you off.
Edit: And just so you know it's not a "Centrino CPU" it's a "Pentium M"

Well, althought the CPU is capable of running at 100C but other components surrounding it are not. So keeping the CPU as cool as possible is always a good idea to prolong the life of your computer.

When I take my X31 down to 600 Mhz the fan stops spinning and temp stays at 40C. My T40 fan doesn't although temp gets down to 29C. It has nothing to do with keeping the temps down, it is a manufacturing error and should be corrected.

Well I did some testing on my T40. My fan comes on low when the temp gets to 41c and runs until its down to 35c then shuts off.
So maybe there is something wrong with your machines.

Keeping the system as cool as possible shold be a good thing.

vpn-user: The fan is really not noisy, why mattering about it? I think, a cooler system will abolutly increase the lifetime of your thinkpad.
