Toshiba hard drive dimensions

#1 Post by 0885 » Tue Oct 25, 2005 9:32 pm

I have a Toshiba MK4026GAX [40Gb,16Mb,5400,2.5"] that I'd like to install in my T42 using the ultrabay adaptor. I ordered the adapter, but got impatient waiting for UPS and thought I'd go ahead and get the drive formatted before the adapter arrived.

After installing it as the primary drive, I turned on the computer, booted a live CD, and discovered that the drive wasn't being recognized. After panicking for a while about firmware and BIOS updates/restrictions, I realized that the drive wasn't even powered on. I turned off the computer, removed the drive from the little bracket, and pushed it on to the connector [*don't do this* it's much easier to get the drive back out with the bracket properly installed].

As it turns out, it seems like this drive is just a tiny bit shorter than the existing one [a 60Gb, 7200RPM Hitachi] and doesn't quite fit in to the female connector when it's in the bracket. Side by side the Hitachi drive looks like it might be <1mm longer. Does this seem reasonable? Have any of you ever had a similar experience? Aren't these things supposed to conform to a standard?

It will be interesting to see how it fits in the ultrabay adaptor when it arrives. It seems trivial to modify the bracket to force the drive in just a little bit further; hopefully the ultrabay won't have the same problem or is just as easy to modify.

Thanks for your help
