T43 Noise problem - just pull the plug

#1 Post by DIGITALgimpus » Fri Oct 28, 2005 5:35 pm

I've been watching the temp on my laptop all week. It's typically between 42C and 48C. I've noticed the fan increases around 45C, but doesn't seem to drop as accurately, hence the loud fan noise problem in the T43's. Even under low CPU usage.

I have found that if I unplug my laptop for about 10 seconds, and plug it back in, the fan throttles down (to save battery life), and stays down.

Anyone else notice this? I just did it about 5 minutes ago, and it's rather quiet right now at a cool 42C. When I unplugged it was 43C and loud.

I've noticed the same thing, but sort of in the opposite situation. I was using my my t43 unplugged in the library, and it was pretty quiet. I then plugged it in, and suddenly the fan noise was much louder. I tried messing with the power scheme settings, even creating a new profile with everything set to minimum on AC, but it didn't help. So I decided to unplug it again. When I did, though, it stayed as loud as it was on AC, much louder than it usually is on battery.

This was pretty annoying, since the louder fan setting was too loud for the library. I messed with it for a while, unplugging/plugging, maybe even restarted it, and eventually I got it to go back down.
Strange quirk. IBM really needs to do something about this fan.

An oddity of the whole thing is that the Maximum Performance setting is good for quieting the fan down for a bit oftentimes, I find. Generally, I run in a Lowest CPU and Balanced fan setting that I've made, but it's not always the quietest, as it should be.

My power scheme is set at fan speed: max performance. If I change the power scheme to fan speed: balance all parameters, nothing happens. But when I change the parameter back to fan speed: max performance, the fan speed throttles down as soon as I hit Apply. After about 10 minutes, it speeds up again.

Sometimes the fan speed throttles down when I plug in or unplug the A/C adapter. But again, after about 10 minutes, it speeds up again. It probably only throttles down at certain temperatures.

I have much the same experience, but this might be of help as well:
