T42 Ram Question

This may be a stupid question, but how can I install more than one ram card in my T42? I want to max it out, but I can only access one slot from the bottom. Do I have to send it in to have the other gig installed?

No, but you have to remove the keyboard to access the second slot, which is underneath it. There are screws on the bottom for removing the keyboard.

The first thing I did to my new T42 was bump the ram to 2gb which meant I had to swap out the factory ram under the keyboard. Follow the instructions on the Lenovo web site and no problems. The only thing I thought was not too clear was the keyboard ribbon cable unplugs at the motherboard end, not at the keyboard. Self-evident since the ram won't come out until the cable end is out of the way, but thought I'd mention it anyway. Took a bit of fiddling to get the keyboard back in alignment for the screws but I was pretty carefull not wanting to put too much pressure on the keys.

To add additional memory to your machine, you just need to open the port on the bottom of the box and add it .. Lenovo fills the slot under the keyboard as a standard practice, as it is much more time consuming for end users to get to. You only need to access the slot under the keyboard if you are swapping out the original memory, not adding another stick. So if you really want to max it out .. yes you need to remove the keyboard and get to that slot as well .. but do you really want to spend the cash on 2GB of memory? Just curious I mean I run 2Gb but just because it's lying around here .. and I'm not paying for it.

Sounds good. Send me some of that memory you have lying around.

It turns out some of us are _upgrading_ to a 2GB laptop because we actually need to do some work that requires more memory... e.g. software development, image processing, etc. (Yes, some folks use their machines for more than just surfin the web and sending email. B^)

The old 512mb machine just thrashes too much. Couple years ago, I couldnt be very productive with less than 512mb. Today the threshold is at about 1GB. 2GB would be better, hence the current offerings have some room for growth. (Btw, it sux that windows is limited to 3GB. (not surprising, though).)
