T42 2373-M3U - some questions

#1 Post by Puggy » Mon Oct 31, 2005 9:29 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a thinkpad for a person at work. She'll be doing mostly office-type and some SPSS (statistical) stuff. I found the 2373-M3U in the tabook, and have some questions. She'll probably use it in 1024x768 mode, but since it will be available to other people, I prefer having the 1400x1050 native.

http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2373M3U

1. Is the model available for buying, even if it's a year old?
2. Do you know were I can get a quote on this machine? Since I'm buying it through the university I can't suggest to buy it from Bill (which I would do, if I could)
3. Can you recommend another model (newer?) with similar specs and price range?
4. Does the battery stick out like the T42p?
5. Can I customize it? (bigger HD, more RAM?)

I appreciate you suggestions/answers.

I would recommend the 2373-H6U, which is currently on the last day of its sale: http://www-131.ibm.com/content/home/sto ... oduct.html

Basically the same specs as the M3U and it is user-configurable. Sale price is $1500, although you can strip it down to about $1341 if you so choose.

EDIT:
Well, looks like they bumped the price up a bit. The price for my configuration is now $1420 (w/ WinXP Home instead of Pro) instead of $1341. Still a good deal, IMO, especially compared to over $2000 for the M3U!

Thanks for the info.

Kendalf (and others?), do you know how to search for prices in the ibm/lenovo website for the model you suggested and the M3U? Not the "Featured product" page, but the regular price page. The thing is that since I'm buying it through the university I can't use the sale prices, just the regular prices.

I cannot find the page with the prices for all the models that IBM sells, just the newer ones.

Thanks for your help.

I found this other computer: T43 2686DGU

http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

It seems comparable to the T42 2373 M3U. And probably go with this one... but still have one question.

Does the 6 Cell battery stick out the back in the T43?

No, it does not stick out; only the 9 cell battery stick out of the back.

Also, the 2686DGU only comes with 1 year warranty. You may want to upgrade to a longer warranty.

Thanks mysbca.

I'll have to consider the warranty, but since i'm on a tight budget I'm trying to get more bang for the buck... would you recommend another system with similar specs (could be slightly lower) that has 3 year warranty?

I appreciate your info.

2373H6U vs. 2373M3U may favor H6U

#8 Post by Esteban » Tue Nov 01, 2005 3:41 pm

I bought a T42 2373M3U in February '05 from IBM with an education/alumni discount (which don't seem to be as widely available now). I am very pleased with it.

I can no longer locate the M3U on Lenovo's website. Did a Google search using "2373M3U" and found it as low as $2,050. One online store claimed to have 110 of them in stock.

The T42 2373H6U seems very similar to a M3U and may be preferable because you can choose your hard drive size, version of Windows XP, amount of memory, wifi card, etc. all for a good price (recently). Though I can no longer find it on Lenovos website--maybe others can.

Even if you can't find a specific model on Lenovo's website, it is worth giving them a call because many times the sales rep can find the model (or a similar model) you are looking for even though it may not be listed on the website.

Yup, I would do the same. I do believe that IBM/Lenovo does not sell certain Thinkpad Models directly since they do not want to compete with their Resellers. For example, I can'f find my Thinkpad, 2668-72U, for sale on their Website...but I got it from the TSW here at a comparable price to the EPP.

Definitely would give them a Call :)

Have you looked at the middle model in the featured product special?
