Question: Install Dual-system with 2nd HDD Adapter

#1 Post by xx86pro » Tue Nov 01, 2005 2:34 pm

I want to add a 2nd HDD using 2nd HDD Adapter for UltraBay Slim on my T42.

I wish to install Windows XP on the 1st HDD and install SuSE Linux 9.2 on the 2nd HDD.

I want the two systems work separately. Actually, I use Windows XP as a daily used system, and SuSE Linux 9.2 will be used as an EDA environment. So, I wonder whether I can choose one of the two systems as the booting system when booting up.

Another question:
What should I regard when install the two systems on different disks?
Will the performance of the HDD in the 2nd HDD Adapter be degraded?
Current: T400 + Advanced Mini Dock + P27T-6 IPS

Here's a guide on installing Ubuntu to the 2nd HDD adapter; it should work for Suse (I actually have Open Suse 10 installed along with Ubuntu on the 2nd HDD now). Basically, if you follow this technique, with both HDDs in the machine, you get a menu for choosing among OSes. If you have only the main HDD, you go directly into Windows (which is all you have if you have only the main HDD).

I run two drives often, with one in the Ultrabay. Just press F12 at the IBM ThinkPad splash screen right after power-up and select which drive to boot from. You can also use any number of boot managers, at least those that let you boot from multiple drives. This config shouldn't pose a problem.

Thanks for your kindness!

Another questions:

1) Can SuSE recognize the ThinkPad 2nd HDD Adapter?
2) My original HDD is Fujitsu MHT2040AH. I like its silence and mild temperature. How about WD scorpio and SAMSUNG M40?
