Good idea. I'll do that today.Roy_W wrote:Have you tried connecting an external monitor in order to determine if the problem lies with the Graphics card or with the LCD.
If you have the opportunity to connect an external monitor can you take a photo, preferably in a darkened room, of the CRT and the LCD running the same image at the same time in order that we can see the difference.

Whyme, try the following to ease eye strain on (example) a 14" display at 1450 resolution. I do some of these as the display on my 2668 is so clear, high res, that seeing things can be tough.
Select a color scheme that doesn't use bright whites. Make your own, and save in the Display properties control panel.
Disable ClearType fone enhancement, use standard. Cleartype sometimes makes letters fuzzier due to it's use of color for anti-aliasing. I stick with the old standard font smoothing. ClearType gives ME a headache.
Disable shadows under desktop fonts. You can find this under My Computer | properties | Advanced | performance | Visual effects.
Use enlarged fonts. Under Display properties, Settings tab, click Advanced and under the General tab you can use enlarged fonts. 125% works for most people, but I'm prone to set it to 110% or 115%.
Hope that helps....

Shame on me for not giving an example. In my color schemes, the "white" I use is (RGB) 255, 250, 240. You can go 255, 250, 192 for text in CMD windows and such if that's still too "white."

Try Mozilla Firefox browser

The fonts thing is driving me nuts but I don't think that would cause it. I've changed dpi size but many are still real small.
In the browser under (I beleive "view") you can change the font sized used by pages - with the browser its all relative. I've noticed that the DPI, in some cases, has no effect on web page fonts.
============
If you're using Internet Explorer, no matter what large dpi setting you choose, many websites still show the same tiny fonts; e.g. cnn.com as well as this thinkpads.com. So, I changed to Mozilla Firefox where you can dramatically enlarge the font of all websites. In Firefox, go to:
Tools/Options/Font&Color/select your Minimum Font Size.
There, you have other choices in pixel sizes too.
In my case, I chose min font 17 pixels, and now the fonts in all websites are much larger, clearer, and in many cases, they are a bit darkened (made bold).
Try it and you'll be surprised.

I got my T43 today!
I love this thing.
About the screen, the font size is better but what would be perfect is an SXGA (this is an SXGA+).
I haven't had a chance to try configuring the display yet. But I am getting a headache so it wasn't a bad screen on the last one. I guess I'm sensitive to something about them.

That's a great idea but I just did that a few months ago. Plus, I don't have this problem with any other computer I work on. It has to be something in the way they light up the screen that I'm sensitive to. I guess I'll just keep a bottle of aspirin next to my laptop from now on.GomJabbar wrote:Maybe you should reread my first post on this threadWhyme wrote:I got my T43 today!

I found that playing around with quickgamma, and the ATI software color controls seems to have made my display a lot better and easier to look at. I'm not sure I adjusted it correctly but it is definitely easier on my eyes now.

Not sure if this has been covered, but have you enabled font smoothing with ClearType in XP? (Display properties, appearance, effects.) I don't like it. It works *pretty well* on these fine LCDs, but essentially it uses color tricks to "fuzz up" the font. I prefer the old ("Standard") font smoothing method. Frankly, the "fuzzy" fonts make my eyes a bit tired sooner.

Well, I've adjusted all of the settings mentioned in this thread and I still seem to be getting eye strain which leads to a headache.
It's not the fonts because no matter how big they are I still get it. I've used a grey background to counter the white but it still happens. I've put the contracts, brightness and gamma really low too.
I'm beginning to think I have some sort of sensitivity to the florescent bulbs used by the screen.
I'm going to use it for another week to see if my eyes can get used to it.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
