Has anybody ever cloned both the Preload AND the HPA?

#1 Post by Photoshopped » Thu Nov 03, 2005 8:38 pm

I'm trying to clone the HDD that came with my T42p over to a 100GB 7K100. I've read a lot of threads on this forum and others about people trying to do this but they all end with no answer or impractical workarounds. Here is what I tried:

1) Using Ghost 2003 - Cloned original IBM drive (not partition) to 7K100 drive. Both partitions are copied over, but it hangs with a blank screen with an underscore before getting to Windows.

2) Some people said you need to use the -ib switch, I'm not sure what that means. I boot Ghost 2003 from a floppy. It loads the Ghost program. Do I then exit to the DOS prompt, and type "Ghost -IB" to start a different version of Ghost? I've tried this but still have the same problem.

3) IBM has a tutorial on disabling the predesktop security and using the IB switch but it says the drives have to be the same size. (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57590). I'm trying to upgade my drive.

4) I can get Ghost 9 to clone the main partition and it boots fine but can't figure out a way to clone the HPA.

5) If I take the disk clone from (1), then try to use Ghost 9 to clone the preload as I did in (4), it hangs at the welcome screen.

I'm going nuts folks, any help would be appreciated.

1) boot with the ghost floppy

2) Options > Image/Tape > Image Boot, ACCEPT

3) Local > Disk > To Disk, DONT CHANGE THE SIZE OF HPA!!!

Thanks but I still get the blank screen with the blinking underscore. I'm cloning them using adapters on a desktop if that matters.

I should add I also tried using the Rescue and Recovery utlity. Backed up the IBM drive to an external drive. Then put in the 7K100. When I try to restore though, it can't see the backup files though. I guess you can only restore to the same drive you backed up from? That's ridiculous.

Tried it inside the laptop with the HDDadapter and finally worked. Thanks!
