Problem with IBM Rescue and Restore v. 3

#1 Post by TPBV » Tue Nov 08, 2005 7:07 am

I have installed ThinkVantage Rescue and Restore v. 3. When I encountered a need to restore the computer from a backup, I discovered that there is a problem since I am using static IP addresses. This problem is addressed in the IBM (or Lenovo) document rr30mst.pdf (Think Vantage Technologies Deployment Guide). Unfortunately the solution described in the document works for v. 2 but not for v. 3. Namely, one of the files that has to be changed is \Preboot\ibmwork\netstart.tbi, and the corresponding instructions
are
3. Get the PREBOOT\IBMWORK NETSTART.TBI file by using the RRUTIL process described in “Using RRUTIL.EXE” on page 18.
4. Change factory -minint to factory -winpe
5. Comment out the following lines:
regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll
netcfg -v -winpe
net start dhcp
net start nla
6. Put the \IBMWORK NETSTART.TBI and \MININT\SYSTEM32 WINBOM.INI files back by using the RRUTIL process described in “Using RRUTIL.EXE” on
Unfortunately my netstart.tbi does not look that way. It looks as follows:

echo start >z:\netstart.tag
regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll
REM *** launch factory wrapper ***
jfactory
REM ******************************
netcfg -v -winpe

Needless to say when I tried to improvise, the thing did not work

ANY ADVICE?
Regards,
BV

Adding a Static IP address To add a Static IP address, you need to change the following files.
1. Get the \MININT\SYSTEM32 WINBOM.INI file by using the IBMRRUTIL process described in “Using IBMRRUTIL.EXE” on page 29.
2. Add [WinPE.Net] section before [PnPDriverUpdate] in WINBOM.INI file. For example, consider the following file: WINBOM.INI
[Factory]
WinBOMType=WinPE
Reseal=No
[WinPE]
Restart=No
[PnPDriverUpdate]
[PnPDrivers]
[NetCards]
[UpdateInis]
[FactoryRunOnce]
[Branding]

[AppPreInstall] You must add the following lines to the [WinPE.Net] section.
[WinPE.Net]
Gateway=9.44.72.1
IPConfig =9.44.72.36
StartNet=Yes
SubnetMask=255.255.255.128

Table 12. Static IP address entries

Gateway
Specifies the IP address of an IP router. Configuring a default gateway creates a default route in the IP routing table. Syntax: Gateway = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

IPConfig
Specifies the IP address that Windows PE uses to connect to a network. Syntax: IPConfig = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

StartNet
Specifies whether to start networking services.
Syntax: StartNet = Yes | No

SubnetMask
Specifies a 32-bit value that enables the recipient of IP packets to distinguish the network ID and host ID portions of the IP address. Syntax: SubnetMask = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

3. Get the PREBOOT\IBMWORK NETSTART.TBI file by using the IBMRRUTIL process described in “Using IBMRRUTIL.EXE” on page 29.
4. Change
factory -minint

to
factory -winpe
5. Comment out the following lines:
regsvr32 /s netcfgx.dll
netcfg -v -winpe
net start dhcp
net start nla
6. Put the \IBMWORK NETSTART.TBI and \MININT\SYSTEM32 WINBOM.INI files back by using the IBMRRUTIL process described in “Using IBMRRUTIL.EXE” on page 29.
Looking at the preceding, have you also edited the WINBOM.INI file?

In the NETSTART.TBI file, try the following edits - one or the other.
change: jfactory to: jfactory -winpe
comment out: jfactory and add: factory -winpe

This is just what I would try. I do not have your setup.

Thanks, I have now succeeded. I tried your suggestion jfactory -winpe (as well as changing winbom.ini)

However, I noticed another anomaly during the restore operation: On quite a few files the RR program reports "compression error". Is there a way to set up RR to verify files after write? I think that version 2 did that; but I cannot find anything about verification in the version 3 manual

Not that I can find. It does seem like something that should be included. :?

Why don't you use Ghost 8 ? Here is what I usually do after getting a new machine:

1. Repartition the disk to 3 drives, C: NTFS for system. D: FAT32 for DOS tools and E: NTFS for data.

2. Fresh install with all basic apps

3. Set the "My Documents" etc location to E: (Using PowerToys)

4. Ghost C: on D:

Now, you can go back to your clean installation within 4 minutes and not losing any data, since they are all on E:, I never put any single file on C:
