USB Ports not working on T42P

#1 Post by BBB » Tue Nov 08, 2005 10:24 am

At first I thought it was a bizarre conflict with WindowBlinds, so I removed that. Then I got an error on startup that said "error 0210 stuck key 08 press <F1> to setup." Unfortunately, I have no idea what this means, and what to do after I press F1.

I jumped the gun and returned to the preinstalled state using Rescue and Recovery, and the ports are still dead. Everything seems fine according the device manager, but my mouse, iPod, and keychain drives are all not visible to the computer. The mouse gets power because the LED is lit, but it does not respond.

Thoughts?

According to IBM, it is a stuck key error. IBM says to:

Run an interactive tests of the keyboard and the auxiliary input device.

You should probably also run the PC doctor program, to see if it can determine which key might be "stuck".

PC doc says no stuck keys

Bios are up to date, and all USB drivers look good according to Device Manager.

Frustrating....

What tfflivemb2 was trying to tell you is that the laptop is reporting that one of the keyboard keys is stuck. In other words it is acting like it is being continually pressed. PC-Doctor might be able to tell you which key on the keyboard is causing the problem.

Another method would be to start a program like Wordpad or Microsoft Word, then press each key one by one and see if it displays on the screen. The problem is that this won't work with certain keys like F10. But if the problem key is one of the letter or number keys, you may find it this way.

Oops. I neglected to relay that PC doctor says all the keys are functioning perfectly, so I called IBM and they quickly decided the motherboard was toast, which will be replaced under warranty.

Not an encouraging sign from an alleged "Cadillac" of computers. Three Macs, one Vaio; never a problem like this within months of ownership. It's the price I pay for needing to run SolidWorks, I guess.

It's the luck of the draw and could have happened with any of them, but it's too bad this is your first experience, since you don't have any perspective on how bad laptop service can be. Compared with the seven weeks Compaq once kept one of mine, three days, door to door seems like an instant that's hardly worth mentioning.

I've got my fingers crossed, because although it's not the prettiest machine out there, it has a nice feel to it, and I've gotten addicted to the trackpoint; it's in such a logical place.
