t23 lcd screen replacement questions

#1 Post by Jimmy » Tue Jul 06, 2004 9:20 pm

i have a t23 2647 5nu, it has a screen resolution of 1400x1050. at 1400x1050 the screen image is smooth like it should be, but everything is very small to view basically. i know that i can go into control panel and do some adjusting that helps enlarge everything but still not happy with it. i would like to run 1024x768 but when i do the screen size shrinks and gets a black boarder around it and the image itself is horrible, grainy ect..

my question is can i replace the lcd screen (since it has a couple dead spots anyway) to a differant type?
if so would i be able to lower the resolution to say 1024x768 and have a boarderless full screen image that is smooth like it should be?
hope this makes sence
thanks, JIMMY

Sounds like you don't have the correct video drivers - take a look on the IBM site and get the latest from T23 the drivers matrix.

No, his drivers should be OK. S3 Supersavage cards have AWFUL scaling, and anything else than the native resolution cannot be read (Ati is much better in that respect). However, I cannot help the OP as I have never replaced different native res LCDs.

Theoretically it is possible (lilserenity is actually planning to "go the other way" with a T23 - XGA -> SXGA+) It all depends on the money you have to spend and your confidence in your technical abilities.

Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual from here:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en-us

It contains all the info you need for disassembly and reassembly and the part numbers of the screen assemblies.

YMMV

Why don' t you just sell it and buy one with a 1024x768 screen from ebay? You could probably make a little $$. I am interested in your T23 if you want to do that.

Hmm... sounds very interesting. I looked at the manual and I am very interested in the SVGA+ upgrade from my T40 (2373) XGA screen.

I looked at the manual and it doesn't seem all that tough. Can someone confirm that the right part numbers are located on p. 238 of the manual? Do I need the LCD cover Kit, Hinges, and LCD Cable assembly?

Anyone know the cost?

thanks

Anyone know if this is feasible with a T40? I saw the post about the T23 being upgraded, wondering if anyone has done it with a t40. Looked online and seems like the only replacement sceen available is the XGA version (~$475).

I'll be calling some lcd stores + IBM to see if I can get my hands on a SVGA+ LCD enclosure.

As long as you replace the cabling with the panel, you can swap either way with the T23, i.e., from 1028 x 768 to 1400 x 1050, or vice versa. Both panels use same inverter, casing, etc. Just the cabling and panel need to stay together.

I have first-hand experience with this, since the on-site service technician received the wrong panel for my T23. I had to use the 1028 x 768 until the correct 1400 x 1050 panel/cabling came in. (What an adjustment after using the higher resolution for over two years!)

Note: The screw holes used to secure case to panel are in different places, but the case has holes for both. Just remove the appropriate covers to access correct holes.

Hope this helps -- even though I'm very late coming in on the thread. :-/
