New T42 system restore?

#1 Post by LeoB » Tue Nov 08, 2005 7:03 pm

Just ordered a new T42 to replace my T40 (supposedly the sixth one that CDW shipped when they came out in 2003). The T40 still works fine, but I want a bigger HD, more memory, a DVD burner, Bluetooth, etc. I opted for the T42 because I didn't want to deal with the heat/fan issues I've seen so much about, and I primarily use it for pretty pedestrian stuff -- no games, compiling, etc.

Anyway, I saw on some post that if you immediately restore the OS from the partitioned drive, it will get rid of about 8GB of junk that's loaded on the machine. Should I make the back-up CDs first, then restore? Or can I just restore before I do anything else?

Thanks in advance,
Leo

Its recommended that you create the recovery disks, just in case

but restoring wont get it of that "8GB junk", it will be right there again

If you want to reclaim that HD space you need to delete the recovery partition. But make the recovery CD's first.

The biggest machine I have with applications but no significant data is just under 6Gb. It is amazing how casually people classify an entire machine and every application on it as "junk" ... JD Hurst

Although IBM and now Lenovo does provide a fairly massive preload, I also would not classify it as "junk". Over the years, Thinkpads have received many editor's choice awards and outstanding reviews. Other than the great hardware, the quality of the preload has been responsible for these favorable reviews.

Granted...there are a bunch of things in the preload that I would dispense with, but I strongly suggest that you find out what every program is, and what it does before blowing it away.
