No third party products...many are using USB enclosures and buying decent 12.5-12.7 mm drives.

Use UJ-832S (IBM FRU P/N is 39T2573) is good solutuin.

Unfortunately the Panasonic Matshita multi or even super-multi burners are not that reliable, though they will give you DVD-RAM capability while others do not (even the one I mention below doesn't). They also can't be made region free. I would go with an external enclosure and buy an NEC ND-6500 or one of it's younger brothers. NewEgg had a great deal on these recently.
