recovery CD's

I just ordered a T42 mainly because I didn't want the heat/noise issues that some say are coming from their T43. Anyways, I'd like to know if there's a way to order recovery CD's BEFORE you know your computer's serial number? I'm asking becuase I think I remember you have a certain amount of time (2 weeks

) to order your CD's after you purchase a laptop (it say's it's on backorder or something). When I called IBM/Lenovo I got the "you can create backup CD's when you recieve your Thinkpad."

I've already tried using the "search" function, but I haven't found what I'm looking for (I've tried 5 seperate times). Thanks for your help.

Never heard of the two week time limit, but from experience you can create the cd's after you get the machine set up. They work fine. If you have a catastrophic HD failure call Lenovo support and they will send you a HD and a set of CD's and an return label for the damaged HD. The CD's are around 50$ US.

That's kind of what I meant. I believe the CD time limit is so you do NOT have to pay the 50$

PS. how are you liking your T42? This is going to be my first one.

But why would you need them to send you the CD's when you can easily burn them yourself when your machine first arrives?

I love my T42, it is a rock solid machine, well worth the money. Best of luck with yours.

Thanks, I tried a T43 at a reseller and at Office Depot (Depot only sells one kind of T43) and I couldn't hear the fan, but then again I wasn't in a place without any noise. Too bad the model is on backorder (or at least the status was as "packing") or else I would be installing stuff on it right now.

I never heard of a 2 week limit for "ordering" CD's. I know I ordered a factory printed set about 2 days after recieving my T42. While you can burn off a set of recovery CD's some might want to order them from IBM. I personally did not hve any "quality" media to burn the discs off to and I did not want to waste my 1 time burn onto bad media. So I called IBM up and told them I need recovery CD's, my rep said he would mail them out fo rme and he even overnighted them to me from atlanta.

There are number of quite valid reasons. Corporate SOE installation is a common one.

For a corporate laptop, the factory OS installation is often totally blown away, including the drive partitioning, during the installation of a corporate SOE (Standard Operating Environment) on the laptop.... that is before the laptop reaches the corporate user. The sys-admins generally do not want users in an SOE environment doing ad-hoc reinstallation of a non-SOE environment on their systems from recovery CDs/partitions.

However, this (generally admirable) sys-admin goal is somewhat at odds with the reality of keeping a laptop going if you do a lot of field work. So computer technology literate corporate users in field work situations usually do like to have a set of recovery media around that they can do some sort of re-installation if it becomes unavoidable while out of contact with the corporate network.... sometime its the only way to get back in touch with the corporate network to reinstall the SOE!

It depends on anumber of variables, including where you are in the world.

I got a set for free from IBM a while back for my t42, but have heard that I was lucky. Right tech, right time. I have read somewhere (on this forum I think) of a registry hack to enable the system to burn another set of CDs. Best thing to do is burn the set and make a couple of copies for safe keeping.

Just called Lenovo Canada, and they said there would be a $49 charge. The woman on the phone was quite firm about it. She told me to use the Cd's of another thinkpad of mine (or from a friend!) instead. Oh well
