Charging more than 1 battery

#1 Post by TimWang » Wed Nov 16, 2005 8:37 pm

I've got a T43 and I was thinking of buying another battery and keep my current battery in my backpack to use as a spare. Is there any other "docking" station that charges batteries? Something that I can just keep under my desk and swap batteries. I've seen a cable like chaging system but don't really like the design.

Assuming you are using Lithium Ion batteries, you may find that you do not need to do this if you are just using it as a "spare". Lithium Ion batteries have a VERY low self-discharge rate when compared with NiCad and NiMH.

Yup, I carry around a spare battery and it indeed has a very low discharge rate. It is recommended, however, that you store them at around 45% Charge, but I have not noticed any bad effects, especially when it comes to the Wear Level.

How about an Ultrabay battery? On my T42p it adds 2 hours and I don't have to do anything special to keep both batteries charged, just plug the laptop in.

The Ultrabay Battery is an Excellent Idea; except when you want to use a CD or DVD :) It amounts to almost the same thing as carrying another battery around with you, but the Ultrabay charges with the Thinkpad's Main Battery at the same time. :)

Hmm... I've never actually considered buying a Ultrabay battery as I thought a 9 cell would be better. I should probably look into that.

I use an IBM external battery charger, charges two at once. It has worked on all my IBM TP batteries from model T21 to my T41P. I bought it for around $15. from Ebay a couple years ago. Most of the time (like 90%) I run my Thinkpads on battery only.

I bought an Ultrabay Slim battery with my T, it adds about 50% more life than the 6-cell. 9-cells are popular and robust ... but I didn't like the way they enlarge the footprint. An internal, second battery option was no option for me, eliminating many possible laptop purchases over the past few years.

Something I REALLY like is how the Power Manager software, well the hardware too, I guess, depletes the smaller battery first, then uses the main. Also, the Power Manager gauge explicitly shows performance, time/% remaining, activity (discharging, charging, no activity) yada yada yada. It's a very nice little system. If you can get an Ultrabay batt below retail price, it's a no-brainer, and you have one less thingie banging around in your bag.
