RAM swap from T43 to T42

#1 Post by PilotDave » Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:47 am

Could you please help with a novice question? I would like to swap DIMMs with a new T43 and a year-old T42. Can you think of any reason why they would not be compatible? Is it easy? Thanks!

My reasoning is that I can order a new T43 with 1 GB RAM in two DIMMs for my father at just $149 over the base price. I can then swap one 512 MB DIMM into the older T42, which currently has a total of 512 MB in two 256 MB DIMMs, and put a 256 MB DIMM back into Dad's new machine. Then we should both have a total of 768 MB RAM and I can give Dad $149 cash to help reduce his purchase cost.

Should that work, or do the DIMM capacities need to be symmetrical?

Thanks!

T43 uses DDRII 533, like this

T42 uses DDR 333 or DDR400

it won't work.

as said above, the T43 uses DDR2. The T42 uses DDR1.

They are not compatible.

It won't work because is a difference of 200 pin SODIMM (T43) connector to a 184 pin SODIMM (T42) connector.

Check the pins.

Um. $149 for a 512 MB DIMM? Okay. He's your father, but.... I got a Kingston 1 GB DIMM on NewEgg within the last month for $xx. I'm sure you can find comparable prices. If he's ordering his lappie with a memory upgrade, have him save his money and get the memory elsewhere. It's easy to install.
Edited for clarity.

If you check the specs, these two machiones use two different type of RAM. SO, it will not work.

though it works, but you don't want to.you'd better choice 512 or 1GMB RAM,never 768MB RAM.because when computer work upgrade to 768M from 512M RAM,there is not any performance improved you can see.and T43 gos with 768M RAM,it will lose DUAL Channle.

Thanks, everyone! I will avoid that idea. Have a great Thanksgiving.
