Using an HDTV as external monitor via DVI-D...?

#1 Post by davidspalding » Fri Nov 18, 2005 7:10 pm

After ordering my 266875U, I realized that I could use the DVI-D on the Dock II to connect to my HDTV. With dreams of monitor-grade clarity on my 31" Philips 16:9 HDTV, I snagged a 16' DVI-D/HDMI cable.

Disappointment. Full screen video was nice with WMP 10, but clarity of text and icons and mouse pointer was only somewhat better than s-video. Even worse.... I was using the ATI drivers ... and had trouble setting the right res for the HDTV (I can't find out what "res" it is, nothing in the manual). Never really got it right, there was a little gap edge to edge.

Tonight I'll try the setup with the Omega 2.675a drivers.... Any words of wisdom, warning, or warm reassurance? ,:)

Res on HDTV is usually 1366 * 768...I do believe that the ATI will do 1360 * 768 which would be close enuff...

FWIW.

Thanks, all good info. With my tinkering, and the choices the ATI and Omega drivers offered, I settled on 1776x1000 at 30hz. I'll go back in the AM and try the 1920x1080. I now recall that when I had a DVD player with HDMI out hooked up, 720p and 1080p (i) worked. But I was happier with 420p's appearance, and sent the DVD player back.

We'll see how the ATI does....

Thanks again. 1920x1080 it is. The Presentation manager wouldn't offer that res, but I learned that you can export a profile, edit it in an ASCII editor, import it again, and it works great.

Changing the refresh speed (30 hz interlaced, 60 hz, and a few others are offered) doesn't seem to do anything. I presume this is an idiosyncracy of DVI monitors/tvs...?
