T40 *very* randomly turns off

#1 Post by notebooknewbie » Sat Nov 19, 2005 12:35 pm

This problem has popped up a few months ago.

Basically, at very random times throughout the day, the computer will just completely SHUT OFF. And I cannot turn it back on unless I detach the battery from the notebook unit and reattach it. I thought it might have to do with overheating, but sometimes it'll turn off even after 1 hour of use. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I have had this happen to my T42 several times. I am not certain, but I think it may be due to static electricity when using a mouse.

So far, every time this has happened, I was using a wired USB mouse with my PC. It seems to happen when I move the mouse or just touch it. I have never felt any static, so this is just a theory. So far, this has never happend in the many hours of use when I am not using the mouse.

Common factors during the shut off:

> At my desk in the office at work.
> Connected to AC
> Using wired mouse.

I just switched to a wireless USB mouse, and so far, no further shut downs.

I posted this same question a couple of weeks ago, and the only serious reply thought I needed a new planar board. I guess this could be possible, but it seems strange that this only happens with the factors that I have listed above. So far, the mouse is my main culprit.

Please post the details of when this happens on your machine. We can compare notes.

Are your contacts dirty? Perhaps when you remove the battery it fixes it.

Possibly the main power supply pcb. This used to happen on my 380ED years ago.

A lot of T40s do this when the system board is bad. Very common.

Worth noting: some spywayre does this as well.
