T42 system board failure?? USB ports/ipod related

#1 Post by Lauzy » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:44 am

So my T42 (2378-FVU) died on me this weekend and I’m suspecting the system board failed. I’ve called tech support and they have to update my warranty since I got it from an online retailer. That’s going to take 3 business days so in the meantime I’m going to ask if you guys know what’s wrong with it or have had similar issues.

The notebook was working fine Thursday evening, I had my IPOD plugged into it to charge it. I don’t remember if I left it on or not when I went to sleep that night. So then I went to work on Friday and when I came home, I thought it was off. So I tried to turn it on and nothing happened. I switched plugs, took out the battery, did all sorts of things and voila it booted. Startup seemed normal but right after windows loads, I get a screen that says ‘please wait….’ (it looked like the windows installation screen), I waited for around 10 minutes and then a black screen comes up with my mouse cursor. Again I waited a while and finally I see the welcome screen and was on my desktop. The system seemed to be performing normally. I rebooted to see if iit would do the same thing.

When I rebooted again, everything seemed alright. But once I got onto my desktop I get a bubble from beside my clock saying something like “hub has exceeded power limit” or something like that. I clicked it and said that my usb hubs had to be resetted or something. So I click reset and it goes away, but comes back a second later. I clicked reset again but it kept on coming back. I ignored it but the bubble was still there. So I went and disable my usb ports, when I did that my system hung and I rebooted. Startup seemed normal until I hit the welcome screen and again it took an extremely long time to reach my desktop. But the bubble was gone. So I re-enabled my USB ports and didn’t bother to restart since I was getting tired and just shut down.

Next day, I try turning on my computer and it was dead. I would get two lights (power and battery) and the fan would turn on but the lcd was blank and the system would not POST. The fan was running but that was it. There were no beeps or anything, just a blank screen.

There’s something defintenly wrong with the system board and I’m pretty sure it had something to do with my Ipod. I’ve read elsewhere on the internet that the AXIM or seotmhign like that had similar issues in overloading the USB ports. Anyone else have similar problems with either an ipod or a axim?

Thanks in advance.

Since you have to wait 3 days...why not try a total reset (Remove battery and hold power ON button for 30 sec) and then reboot. If this gets you up and running, you might want to restore your system.

seems like the system board is dying....

might not be caused by iPOD, just some regular hardware failure.
