2378-FVU memory question

#1 Post by wolfman » Thu Jul 08, 2004 9:00 pm

Hello all, I'm considering purchasing this laptop and have a problem. I'd like to use the 2 512 meg sticks of PC2100 that I already have in my R40 machine. I *believe* the 2378-FVU uses the 855PM chipset which supports PC2100 and PC2700. IBM ships the unit with a stick of PC2700. My question is if I remove that stick of PC2700 and replace it with my two sticks of PC2100, the BIOS will adjust the memory bus to PC2100 speed and all will be OK? Thanks!!!

i dont see why you would want to do that though...youll be loosing speed. sell your 2100 sticks, shell out a little extra dough and get 2700 sticks.

Ther reason was mostly that I read a post here a few weeks ago where there was a T40 and T41 with the same amount of ram, same processor and same hard disk and the benchmark results for PC2700 versus PC2100 were only between 2-4% different. I didn't feel that amount of increase was worth the trouble, however, if other users experience a bigger performance difference I might be worth it.

Where did you read this?

I would think that pc2100 (266mhz) vs pc2700 (333mhz) would make a bigger difference because it would limit your fsb from fetching memory as fast,

but the more I think about it I could understand why you wouldn't gain as much due to the 400Mhz fsb of the Pentium M chips. I think it would make a bigger difference in a system that had a higher fsb.

Any links to the memeory speed review?
