China keyboard: part number?
China keyboard: part number?
I don't see a number like "08K4986 Model RMUS" on the back of my 15" T42P.
Which number is the right now? 93p4810 or 93p4840? Is the 08K5044 RM87 the right Thai replacement?
I definitely noticed the keys were more clacky and less solid than other Thinkpads.
Thanks!

Got the same piece, really disappointed
Contact IBM and let me know your story. They told me the 08K5044 RM87 made in Thailand keyboard is backorder for 10 or more days. I am not sure what they are sending me as a replacement, just said that it will be better than what I have currently.

Thanks. Your original review was what prompted me to crack open my brand new machine to check. I definitely noticed that the keyboard wasn't as stiff as some of the others I've tried. Considering I have 3 Model Ms and 4 Omnikey Ultras in my closet, keyboard feel is enough of a deal for me to call IBM and get a replacement.
Glad to be of help
Yeh, the keyboard is really a deal breaker for me too. Kind of ironic, while not ever being an IBM Thinkpad owner before, I played around with at least 10 other Thinkpads from family and friends over the years and had always appreciated the feel and responsiveness of the keyboards, only to find out the hard way on my first Thinkpad. Hopefully, the new keyboard replacement will change my current state of dissatisfaction.
Are the old keyboards available for sale? JK

Re: Glad to be of help
Quick Q - did you call the service number included in the service/troubleshoot documentation included with the tp?
Re: keyboards - I paid over $100 for my favorite brand new Omnikey ultra (call me supergeek). I'm acutally in the middle of a big move, and those keyboards are actually being packed up for storage at my parent's house. If you're serious about buying one, let me know
It's too bad the tps don't come with PS2 sockets, I haven't even started looking for a PS2 to USB for them yet.

Whom to call
I am not familiar with the Ultranav keyboard, external Kb I presumed. I called the customer service number in the back of the book and got some guy from India I think, then he transferred me to another guy in tech support in the US, then after a lengthy conversation and numerous field questions he then passed me on to another Thinkpad T42 support team. I called the IBM triage team.
