A chat with Lenovo and the T43 Fan Issues

#1 Post by Domain » Mon Nov 28, 2005 3:18 pm

This is slightly out of context as I had other questions, but to those wondering if there were any running changes made:

Alex: Okay.. and some owners have told me that the t43 has
a weird problem with the fans
Alex: like
Alex: it sounds like it's pulsing
Alex: have you heard of that and were there any changes
made?
Derek_Pyper: I have heard cases, but it was more of a
technical issue that have gone down over time, so changes
must have been made
Alex: but you can't confirm that at all and get back to
me?
Derek_Pyper: because we receive much less calls about the
issue
Alex: I see...
Alex: Alright, thanks.

Hmmm, sounds like they know about it existing and have taken action. Although I can imagine that the R&D Engineers would know way more about the fan saga then the support people would. Information does get sent to the support people at intervals, but only when the Engineers and Managers feel as if they have a good handle on the issue and it is progressing well enough; so I guess that is a good sign. I don't think they can tell you if any hardware revisions have been made to the fan setup per say...That would require you talking to one of the Engineers on the Project. IBM/Lenovo has been opne about most things, but when they want to lock something down...They are up there with the best of them keeping a lid on new stuff and ongiong projects, just like Apple. :)

I have to admit, it was a little upsetting that he couldn't give me a firm answer, but at least they haven't been getting the calls. Which yes, is a good sign.

At least he tried to answer, unlike HP who I asked about something one time said they couldn't tell me because it was company policy :D

No, not bashing, but a statement of fact about support. :)

Oh, by the way, it is a somewhat cool day today, around 53 Degrees F, and I have been running continuously for 1 hour and 15 minutes, only now has the fan come on. Very interesting, it seems that, no suprise, ambient temperature plays a big role in whether or not the fan turns on at a specific time. I have also noticed slight changes in fan behavior when the ambient temperature varies. I will try Shimodex's Fan Control Program and see how it goes. :)

UPDATE: I just noticed that you had an iSeries; yeah, IBM didn't actually make those as far as I know, they gave the Contract out to Acer
I guess somebody learned to not do that anymore after the iSeries.

That's good news. Again, not to bash HP, but that thing actually raised the temperature of the room. Some days, I would sweat when I used that thing.

No joke!

As for the fan program..please do, though being in warranty when I get mine I'd be afraid of frying it. Of course, if it got too hot it should do a fail-safe and shut off.

Unless he bypassed that too. :)
