T43 fingerprint reader + wifi = incompatible???

#1 Post by Skysurfer » Tue Nov 29, 2005 2:14 am

I have been using a T43 for the past three months without a problem...

8)

...until I bought a Lynksys wifi "g" router. Now whenever the TP comes out of standby mode, the fingerprint reader takes 10 to 20 seconds (sometimes never) to register a finger swipe.

I am, of course, guessing that the addition of the wireless router is the cause of the problem since that has been the only change to my system. I suspect that every time the TP comes out of standby, the fingerprint reader is put on hold until the wireless connection is (automatically) regained. Does that make sense? Does anyone have any fixes for this?

That would make some sense, yes. :)

The Thinkpad does prefer to regain the Wireless connection automatically *before* the User logs in. Just curious, what does it say when it can't read the fingerprint?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

There's an option in Access Connections, something like "use wireless connection for Windows logon." I tried it once. ONCE.

It didn't delay the fingerprint read, but it did make logging on soooo much slower, and frankly, I was happy with AC connecting automagically after logging in.

Sometimes the fingerprint reader on mine takes a moment to "wake up." 5-10 secs max. If you're really having long waits, you might try deleting all fingerprint profiles, then creating them again.

As for the router,.. you have my sympathies. This last week I found several things that made me look at my WRT54G 1.1 with raised eyebrow. But for your problem - think about it. What could a router do to your T's fingerprint hardware?

It doesn't do anything. No popup dialogs. Nothing. Sometimes when I get the request to swipe a finger, and I swipe one, it's as if I never swiped a finger at all. Sometimes, the screen blanks out (or times out?). Sometimes another dialog box pops up with a picture showing me how to swipe my finger. But more often than not, nothing happens.

I'm going to call IBM and see if I can't turn off the "automatic" network connection feature. Hopefully, that will solve the problem.
