I keep loosing my connection.
I keep loosing my connection.
My T42 with the IBM a/b/g wireless card randomly disconnects from the internet. I get the work off line box. You know the box that asks if you want to work off line or try to reconnect. I hit reconnect and i'm right back on. It does not seem to happen while i'm actually on the net. It seems to happen when i'm idle. My daughters Dell is on the same wireless network and she never looses the connection.
So i'm guessing it's a setting i'm missing or a bad card. Leaning towards a setting that has changed. It started a month or so ago.
Any help would be great.

Do you have the latest wifi drivers for your particular model?

Both of my machines at home randomly get disconnected now and then, it is not the laptop (in my case) but the router, a Belkin. Try rebooting the router, from the web page of the router. This is true for Linksys, Netgear, etc. etc. There are firmware updates available, and some even have 3d party firmwares, not recommended unless you are a router gu ru.
The IBM card with latest drivers is rock solid. I don't recall ever losing a connection as you describe. So:
1. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the Wireless card.
2. Router needs firmware upgrade (yes, they react differently to different cards).
3. The router is not up to the task and needs replacing with a better router.
4. The wireless card in your T is bad and needs replacing.

Hi,
I'd also like to reinforce the message about the router/access point. I have a T40 w/intel 2100 802.11b card, and a T42 with the atheros based abg one, and with my previous AP, (USR2249) i got random blue screens with the T42, and frequent disconnects with the T40. The new router (DI-824VUP+) works flawlessly w/both machines, so try first to update the firmware in your router, and if that fails, try with another one card and/or router to identify where the problem really is.

Like Kyocera said, routers respond differently to different wireless cards. I've experienced that myself. What kind of router are you using?
Also, I use a 2200bg wifi card and I experienced many problems with the software configuration between Access Connections and XP. In the end, I completely uninstalled Access Connections and stayed with the XP connection manager. Since then I havent experienced any wireless problems..

A-ha. You might check what power-saving mode you're using: CAM, Max, or minimal power saving. You might be losing when the wireless card goes into aware-lower-power setting.
[There's another thread here about power saving. Take a look, it's quite easy to adjust in Access Connections or the equivalent wirelss connection profile manager software.]
Just a guess.... ,:)
