Verdict on New BOIS/fan issue?

#1 Post by pipspeak » Sun Dec 04, 2005 2:45 pm

It would seem, from reading a few posts, that the new Embedded Controller/BIOS does not seem to fix the fan issues that plague T43s but I wondered if anyone has any positive news.

I don't have the pulsing fan problem so much as just a fan that is permanently on (T43 - 2668 model), mainly low but sometimes medium level, and even when the machine is running no apps at all.

Can anyone report whether the new EC/BOIS changes this behaviour at all?

Fo me, it has increased the temperature at which the fan kicks in; thus giving me around an hour when I am on battery.

EDIT: Well, I just plugged into power about 45 minutes into the battery only operation of the Thinkpad, and the Fan just shut off again. I wonder why this always seems to happen when I plug into AC.

That's good to hear... even an hour without the hum of the fan would be welcome. Did you update only the Embedded Contoller or the Bios too?

I'm only planning to update the EC since I have not been having the 2010 error problem that the new Bios fixes (I currently have Bios v1.22).

I updated both the BIOS and the EC. On a different note, I haven't had the pulsing fan problem, so I can't say whether or not it fixes that. :)

I've had odd results. Now a few days later here's the trend. I run mostly plugged in.

Previously my laptop ran aprox 42. Fan alwys on.

Now I run aprox 37-40, a larger range, fan always on, aprox the same speed.

Now I wish they could just do the 42 with the fan off ;)

I guess that's progress.

There's one thing I noticed. The fan has a turn on and turn off level, e.g. turn on at 43°C and turn off at 38°C. The status in the in between area depends on from which temperature the system is coming (down from over 43 the fan will be on there, up from 38 the fan will be off).

Now, if you change the power scheme (e.g. in the Thinkpad Battery tool) while being in the gray area, the fan always goes off. Probably the same is true when plugging in.

Yup, I was thinking along those lines Shimodax, but my power profile doesn't change at all. I have it setup to run on minimum when on battery and maximum when on AC; as far as I know, it just switches between those two within the power profile and doesn't change the scheme itself. Strange...

Ah, finally an explanation as to why my fan is on all the time (and why it goes off when I change anything in Power Manager). Thanks for clarifying.

It's annoying that my machine apparently takes only five minutes to reach that threshold after starting up.
