Thinkpad T43 carrying case

#1 Post by mozone16 » Mon Dec 05, 2005 5:11 pm

I just recently bought a T43 and I am looking for a something to carry it in. I do not want a traditional bag or backpack. I am looking for something small yet durable to put my thinkpad into and then slide it into my backpack (i am a student). Does anyone have a case that they would recommend or have seen? Thanks!

15" or 14"? That's important because there are different options for the two sizes. People on here love the waterfield case. I use my computer like you, so I wanted something that fit with no extra bulk or slack. There weren't a whole lot of options for 14" t4x's that I found though. I ended up ordering a bitolithic sleeve, and I like it, even though it doesn't offer the most protection. I did a review with pictures on here, if you do a search. If you have a 15" computer, you should have more options.

I bought a Case Logic neoprene zippered pouch designed for notebooks. It was snug, slim, and allowed me to put the notebook into any briefcase I wanted. Just make sure that the particular model case you buy has rigid sidings to make sure your books don't crunch the T43.

Check out these sites:

www.shinza.com

or

www.booqbags.com

They have what appear to be durable sleeves for notebooks. If you don't mind spending $30-$40 for one.

I'd go with Waterfield

http://www.sfbags.com/index.htm

They are a bit pricey, but they are durable and lightweight. The piggyback is large enough to place the adapter and a small mouse and I also manage to put my wallet and keys. I thoughta lot before buying this bag, but I don't regret spending money on it.

I second the Waterfield choice! Best bang for tha buck you can get out there and, so far it has been great for the last 4 months I have had it along with my TP. :)

+1 here. I'm a college student, too.
My Waterfield case fits easily in my backpack and provides superior protection.

It's a little bit on the pricey side, but you did buy a TP right?
IMO since you paid so much for a notebook, why skimp on its protection?

I'm happy with my Brain Cell. http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0300

I have the size 4 which fits my T41p perfectly with the 6 cell battery.

I can whole-heartedly recommend one of Patagonia's bags. Several models feature a padded sleeve for a pc, with strap for securing.

I've used a Vertical Mass bag for a few years, it's been great,

http://tinyurl.com/3jfsr

Just got one of these this week, since the Vertical Mass bag is *just* enough for a 14" T43, Targus CoolPad, cell phone, and a paperback book. This one, even not on sale, is a real bargain. I suspect even a 15" TP will fit, no problem. Two handles, PC compartment, superb removable shoulder strap (you'll want to use it with other bags; they also sell a full size strap for $25 or so), and hidden backpack straps if you decide to go on foot down some mountain goat path. It even has waterproof zippers on the outside, and the protected zippers can be secured with a luggage lock or cable-tie.

http://tinyurl.com/dr27s

Patagonia's great about returns, so if you get it and don't like it, you're not stuck with it. But I think you'll like it. Inch by inch, Patagonia puts more thoughful and clever features into their bags than most other makers. Only a select few (Brenthaven, some others) even come close.

And for me ... the nicest feature ... neither of these bags yell out "I've got a fancy laptop inside me!" like Targus or those way-too-distinctive IBM bags do. If you're undecided about the two, the One Bag would be my recommendation. But lifestyle might call for the utility of the Mass bag, with it's cellphone/pda sleeves on each side (that's what I use 'em for).

I got to suggest the Waterfield case. I have been using it for both my T42p, X41 tablet and T43p.

I have had lots of comments from others in the board room and I notice 3 who commented had their Water field case the next meeting! :P

Why are people suggesting fully fledged bags? The OP did specifically say he didn't want one.

mozone16, what you're looking for is a sleeve type case. There's a few out there (just search the forums), but I recommend the Waterfield SleeveCase in the vertical orientation if you're putting it in your backpack. My first SleeveCase kept my Fujitsu S6010 safe through carrying it around during 4 years of university, and my second SleeveCase has kept my T42 safe the past year and a bit. It'll be good enough to keep your notebook safe from knocks and bumps and a few light drops, without bulking up and increasing your carrying weight.

Brewt was right, the OP mentioned a "bag" or case which could fit into a backpack. I can't remember the brand name, but I saw some really ginchy ones at a local Apple store.

I'm posting here again because I found what I would consider a "de luxe" bag for a TP, which again satisfies my own high-level criteria that a bag NOT look like a computer bag. And this bag is even color coordinated with the Thinkpad color scheme (black, with red details).

I'd also go with the waterfield case. I have the vertical one, and it fits perfectly. I got the base model, with no flap, no strap, etc., and it's perfect for my backpack. Ok time to go bring my laptop somewhere else to do work.

another tom bihn owner here. the brain cell is an awesome sleeve/bag. i also have the size 4 for my t42p with 6cell battery (you'll need a larger size with a 9cell battery). the corrugated plastic skeleton offers good protection for a bag this small and the side pocket is just big enough for my mouse/power adapter/ and lock.

Hi, am surprised that Crumpler bags haven't been mentioned yet.

This one http://www.laptopshop.co.uk/crumpler-th ... -3-cc2.htm#
fits the t4x's with 14" screen perfect. I don't know whether it can close round the lappy with the extended battery pack thought - as I haven't tried it yet. But I guess so – there is some space left for it there. Actually, is there anybody who's tried it?

Regards.

P.S. The company has crazy home pages http://www.crumplernyc.com/home.php ...

Crumpler Messenger Bags

#20 Post by bfgun » Sun Jan 29, 2006 8:59 am

I have a crumpler messenger bag designed for laptops. It's nice, stylish, and doesnt even look like a laptop bag at all. laptop fits in there, as well as plenty of room for your other things. My 15" version will accomodate my t43 with the 9 cell, there's also a velcro strap inside the back to secure the machine. Oh yeah, it's nicely padded. thick firm padding.

Check 'em out. :)

I fyou need a really classy sleeve to slip inside your backpack, then check out the viper sleeves at http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=542. A little on the expensive side, but pretty classy and robust in design.

A whole heated bump for the WaterField Sleeve. Immaculate construction. I was torn between the booq bag and waterfield, but in the end the perfect fit of waterfield with over 40 different sizes made my decission and after recieving the bag... I am so darn happy for getting it.

Impeccable construction quality.... just love it.

Waterfield Sleeve

#23 Post by Geoff_AZ » Tue May 16, 2006 2:48 pm

For those with Waterfield Sleeves -- do you recommend the top flap? Did you get a strap? Piggyback?

Looking at that, the Shinza, and the Brain Cell for a T40 I bought. Will probably stick it in my Timbuk2 but may carry it alone from time to time.

Thanks!

I almost bought a stm Rebound for my T40 (didn't do so because I couldn't find a 14" anywhere other than an online store here in Australia) :

http://www.radtech.us/Products/SpecialtyBags.aspx

My first impressions of it were that it was a solid sleeve that would be perfect for what you're looking for. :)
