Ram upgrading

#1 Post by this is me » Mon Dec 05, 2005 6:29 pm

Right now I have 1gig of ram and a free slot. I want to add another 1gig in there to make it 2. Is it a big difference?

Mmmmm, depends on what you do; that will be the primary factor on whether you notice it or not. I can say that I find that 1GB is enough for me though, I might upgrade to 2GB in the future; who knows? If I remember correctly, there was a problem with windows not resuming/suspending correctly with 1.5 or 2GB; I think MS put out a Hotfix for it.

2GB!!! Its fancy though to have it. Anyway, I use a lot of Matlab, Dreamweaver, MAcromedia Flash and Orcad/Cadence design. I enjoy multitasking a lot and at time a zillion - 1 windows may be open on mine and yet, it has never exceeded 1GB Ram requirement. Unless you are using some reeealy high end software or have configured your pc as a work-station etc, you do not need 2GB. You will not notice even a ounce in improvement because your whole OS and application loads up within the specified 1GB. Again this is all depending on what you use your computer and how many of the system hogging softwares you use simultaneously. But I can easily say that for 95% of the folks anything more than 1GB is money gone waste as of now. But, you may just need it in the future, I don't know.

You can`t spoil your Porrige with more butter (It`s an old Russian proverb) :D
So the more memory you have, the fast you go.
And to be serious - very important fact is, that:
Your memory controller is working in one channel mode(64 bit) when you have only one memory module installed. With your memory controller switched to dual channel mode(128 bits) with the second 1 Gb RAM module, you`ll get 10-15% boost in heavy applications, such as video compression, vector maps editing and so on...
701(oh, baby!) -> 560 -> 600 -> X22 -> T22 -> R50 -> R52

Sorry for my English, I am from Russia (You know - vodka, bears and Kalashnikov assault rifle :D)

your english is MUCH better than my russian..!
and my wife, who is the irish/english product of an english english teacher and an irish literary professor keeps telling me that my english is not.. english that is.. :)

AND, back to the topic now, i always max out my memory..
1.5gig in the used X41 i piced up from a forum member, 1.5gig in the X41 tablet and 2gig in my T43p..

never heard of a suspend problem and have not experienced such, either..

besides, memory is super cheap, so why not max it out.. ?!

I have to agree with @billMorrow, max out if you can. The proverb @sura used is great, it's been a while since I found so much wisdom AND humor in a one-liner....

You might also want to look at this thread dealing with how to pick your RAM modules. Apparently, you need to match capacity to get the best possible performance

Is this true for all T4x models?

I've been thinking about being extravagant and buying an additional 1 GB even though I don't really have the need, but the speed increase would make it worth it for me.
