DVD burner for T42 Is it a bad choice?

#1 Post by gg3761 » Tue Dec 06, 2005 7:54 pm

I've got the dvd rom/cd burner in my T42 and would like to change it out for a dvd/cd burner. Where is the best source? What model #? I've heard the IBM model that fits kinda sucks.

If you want to replace it with another DVD/CD Burner, I don't know what I can recommend since I haven't seen, on the Forums or otherwise, a Slimbay DVD Burner device that burns faster than the multi-burner plus (2.4x if I remember correctly, please correct me if I am wrong) :?

If you want to get an external unit, I have heard that the NECs are indeed good DVD Burners but I haven't tried them. I have tryied my DVD Burner and found it adequate for my needs...True, it could be a bit faster, but it is something

HTH :)

That's effectively your only choice for an internal CD/DVD burner, as the T4* series use a 9.5mm thick drive.

There are more, and better choices, with 12mm thick drives. A number of participants here use them in an external USB attached drive case.

I went with a recent Sony DW-Q58A model and have been very happy with it.

Cheers,

Bill

Also, from this forum i *think* that IBM T42 & T43 makes product CD-ROMS and not one single DVD.

So you still get 7 CD's for Product Recovery even with with CD/DVD burner, so not as useful as you might think.

(Others with actual CD/DVD Product Recovery experience may wish to confirm this?)

Thanks guys. I found an ultra slim drive on ebay for $195. I think i'll look into an external setup.

I think, for R&R, you can make one CD and then one DVD, right?

That's what I read some doing on this forum. I believe you can also use 2 DVD's if you prefer, although that is a waste of space on one of the DVD's
