7k60G Hitachi Hard drive clicking noise!
7k60G Hitachi Hard drive clicking noise!
Did anyone ever notice the clicking noise of this hard drive, every about 1sec, the harddrive light flashes with some clicking noise.
I ever used 4200rpm 60G, the noise is not so much..
very annoying

Here's what I would do:
Re-boot and go into the BIOS setup. Is the hard drive clicking while in setup? If so, then I'd immediatly back up your files and order a new drive, because I would suspect that drive is about to die.
If the clicking isn't present while in BIOS setup, then it's probably caused bya process running in Windows accessing your hard drive once per second. Open the Task Manager (press Shift + Ctrl + Esc), click on Processes, and start ending processes until the sound goes away. When you figure out which process is accessing your hard drive once per second, you can work on permanently removing that program or reconfiguring it. Re-booting will restore all of the stopped processed back to their normal state.

Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Thanks for your reply. during the boot, the noise is not too much. The clark,clark,... is during the system idle, for example, when I am looking through the webpages.
and also, this 7k60G is a new one I got last week. I am not sure is that normal or not.
IBM has an active protection program to monitor the harddrive, I guess if it is affected by this program.
thanks

I used to have a Hitachi drive in another ThinkPad and it was noisy all the time. The Fujitsu in my T42 is very quiet.
You might try the Hitachi Feature Tool.
You might try the Hitachi Feature Tool.
The Feature Tool allows you to:
* Change the drive Automatic Acoustic Management settings to the:
o Lowest acoustic emanation setting (Quiet Seek Mode), or
o Maximum performance level (Normal Seek Mode).

Stay away from 7200 hard drive. I have one (80G 7K100) in my thinkpads. It is noisy, though heat is ok. When I use the computer in normal position (your ear about half meter from the disk), I can clearly hear the click sound with a backgroud rotating noise (similar sound level like the cooling fan).

Hitachi 7200 rpm noise
Hi .
I have a 60 Gb 7K60 which makes that clicky sound - and a 7K100 100 GB that doesnt.
So the pattern isnt that obvious. I will try the feature tool that I have downloaded long ago. I havent burned the cd yet though. Might return with experiences concerning that.

Clicking sound from 7K60 harddrive
I used the Hitachi drive feature tool ver. 1.99 and it certainly did improve, if not to say cured the click sound.
I guess I had back in time set powersave "to max performance" which in fact meant that I had disabled the power save.
After setting it to automatic the click sound disappeared.
Nice that I finally did take my time to look into the matter .

My drive sounds like it's trying to spin down, or losing power temporarily, and then spinning up to full speed afterwards. Has anyone else experienced this with a 7K100 or another drive?
It happens more frequently than the drive power off specified in the Power Settings.

hello, I also have the similar questions with my new T43.
My harddrive is also 7k60.
I used the feature Tool from hitachi.
Are there only two settings related with the noise?
1. Automatic Acoustic Management
2. Advanced Power Management
how to set these two? I cannot find auto values as it is said above.
Could you give me a detail help?
(I use Feature tool 1.99)
Thanks
