Video Out Connector????

#1 Post by manixc » Sat Jul 10, 2004 5:45 pm

Hi all, I have a question about using the Video Out Connector on my T42. The model I have is 2738FUU.

The question is how do I use the Video Out to connect to a TV?????

I have done the following:
I have one of those RCA cables (those that connect VCR/DVD to TV) and a S-Video to RCA connecter (from my Voodoo3 card, it's 4pin so It's a perfect match). I have the yellow cable plug into the S-video to RGA connector and the S-video/RGA connector plug into the video out connector (on the left).

I then use Thinkpad Configuration to switch the display to TV/LCD. I then go to the Display > Settings > Advanced > Display
The (i) cornor is green/blue but it still shows as not connected. And there's nothing on TV. The LCD still display the desktop.

So what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Well - now that we have that cleared up.

I've tried to get it to work on T20, T21, and T23 machines - and I've never had any luck either...

hum.. does not the T42 come with the S-Video-to-RCA convertor comes with the ThinkPad?

My A20p came with it and I never had any problem to see it on projectors, TV, or VCR.

There was two ways, one was by going to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Displays and then to put TV as Primiry and deactivate the Panel if whatching a protected DVD.
The other method is just by rebooting the laptop after all the cables and Tv are on. The video drivers will sense the TV then.

I do hope, the T42 has not loose this flexibility, if not I will be forced to get a... non-IBM laptop
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

I've never used a S-video to RCA adapter, but my TV and any projectors I use on the road take S-video, so I simply use an S-video to s-video cord and RARELY have any problems. Sometimes, however, the ThinkPad doesn't "sense" the thing plugged into it and you to to unplug it and replug it in.

Vaites, that is something... so no adaptors

At least the T42 should come with SVideo-RCA adaptors, and so with USB-Serial adaptor too. That probably adds $2 in cost, but $1000s in value for us. And, please... 2USB are simply put, not enough.

I was playing with a old ThinkPad 570 (1999) and to see all those ports that the T42 is lacking such as serial, mouse, line-in, etc and still it is much thinner than the T42, I thought; 'Maybe we are not getting same value from IBM as we used to!'
