How can I use my T43 laptop as a monitor?

#1 Post by Thinkhead » Mon Dec 12, 2005 10:23 am

Hello!

I am new here and already browsed the forum but could find no help yet.

Here is what I would like to do:

I have a desktop PC at work and my T43 laptop (both running Win XP SP2) which I would like to use as an extra monitor while working on the desktop box (just like dual monitor).

While the Thinkpad has a VGA output I would rather feed the monitor INTO the laptop. Is there any way to do that? Hardware or Software?

I could imagine, sending the screen contents through the network?!

I would be happy for any help! 8)

Problem is that you cannot input the Video Signal, as you have no Vidoe in or S-Vidoe in etc.

Over the Network you can probably do that with a tool like VNC, but you will just get a copy of your actual Screen.
I don't think that you can make your Desktop bigger.

I just found a solution:

It does not need any hardware! There is a software called Maxivista and it is the thing I have dreamed about! I am just trying out the demo. It is awesome!

http://www.maxivista.com

Maxivista does not only extend the desktop tot the laptop but i can also control it from the desktop pc. I knew that there was some other programs doing this as well, but Maxivista does it really smooth for just 40$

Where is my credit card.... :D

I must admit, "Maxivista" is the neatest thing I have came across in a long time. Simly wow!

I was going to laugh at you, but the joke's on me. That program is pretty wicked.

Did not have time to try yet -- but that really sounds like a killer app.

@nrj45: I tried Synergy but it was a nightmare to setup and is just not what I asked for.

Synergy only allows just to remote controlling and that is also included into Maxivista as a "side dish" anyway:

Works smoothly on my X31 as well.

I especially like the clever combination of software kvm and extended screen. just need to hit scroll lock to switch between the 2 functions. very cool.

I would love to use extended desktop only if I could get the start bar to mirror on all of the monitors. Does MaxiVista allow that?

yes, you can easily mirror Start with MaxiVista.

Maxivista does not allow mirroring the taskbar (if that is what you mean), but http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm does it (Freeware).

I tried this Maxvista software and it seems to be pretty cool. The speed is much faster than expected.

Anyone got it running on Vista beta?
