one more time - prospective fears for a T43 buyer...

#1 Post by rvlmtfnk » Sun Dec 18, 2005 12:40 am

Is the heat issue with the T43 a significant problem that will cause lag in performance, very excessive heat resulting in damaged hardware.. etc i'm thinking dell 5000 series crap. that's what i'm replacing. i'm hoping for a problem free, not overheating, not heavy, not laggy, faster performing.. something that will actually let me actually watch a dvd without constant lag.. will the t43 overheat? i don't mind slight heat, but when it hurts performance and drastically reduces the life of the computer, that's a problem.... hope someone can help me out here.

also, will the 7200rpm harddrive be a problem with regards to an increase in heat?

also, will the 64mb x300 hold up for games like Need For Speed, Counter-Strike, etc... hold up as in lag-free gaming with nice graphics.

ALSO, does the t43 come standard with the bluetooth? i can't seem to find the option while building my own on lenovo's website?

ALSO ALSO, do I have to get the a/b/g adapter to use wireless? or does it come standard with built in wireless already...

sorry if i'm asking stupid questions, but i'm not super tech savvy...

(Specifically, I'm looking at a T43 with the 14.1inch sxga+ screen, 1.5gig ram, 1.86ghz, 64mb x300, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, dvd/cd-rw, xp pro....)

No, the much over-blown "heat issue" does not cause performance loss; it doesn't even break a sweat for me when I use it on my lap for two hours. You can watch a DVD perfectly fine without any lag. As for games, I think you will be pleasantly suprised by the performance of the Graphics Card. It can handle CS:Source, Serious Sam 2, Half Life 2, and Far Cry with no problem here. If you check out my Thinkpad specs, you will find that mine comes with Bluetooth and a/b/g Wireless. A 7200RPM HDD will not add significantly to the heat unless you run at full all day long; by that, I mean defrag+disk cleanup+virus scan+moving large files at the same time for 24 hours....So, no; the HDD won't a problem. HTH :)

so it does come standard with the bluetooth and the a/b/g? it didn't mention it when i was customizing mine. it just said something like... wireless upgradable or something.. if you have time, try customizing one like what i was looking for, and scroll down to the wireless part. i don't see any mention of the bluetooth... and also see if that is what you meant about the wireless... that i didn't need the adapter...

Have you looked through the Tabbook.pdf? That lists just about all the models that you could think of. Although the Website is somewhat lacking in detail, Wireless should come on all T4X Models. You have to customize it to a/b/g. :)

My T43 doesn't have the bluetooth. So not all T43s have it. As for wireless a/b/g, some have the Intel 2200a/b and some have the Intel 2915 a/b/g.

Can you provide me the exact link to it?

Here it is:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

That is the tabook.pdf link; it is also in the FAQ along with some other stuff you might want to check out. :)

one word, don't bother..
ok, two words..
but you get the idea..

for some strange reason you can't build what you want only what they will let you build..

best bet is buy the model off the shelf, so to speak..

i use a T43p (2668Q2U), an X41 tablet and an X41..

I found out that it doesn't come with Bluetooth, but we'll see how desperate I am for it, cos I know I can do the switch. Anyway, do i need a/b/g, or can i make do with b/g? what is the difference?

also, by the sound of it (mini-pci adapter), it sounds like it sticks out of somewhere... or is it an internal swap. thanks.

Here's the scoop, so far's I understand it (Chris, correct me/edit me/whack me if I'm wrong). Some machine types (the "xxxx" of the model, e.g 2668-xxx) have the Bluetooth antenna and leads installed. Some of those models (the "xxx" of the model, e.g. 2668-75U) come with a CDC (communications daughter card) with modem AND Bluetooth. Other models come with just a modem CDC, but Bluetooth antenna is still in the lid, so they're considered "upgradeable." If you look on the page in TABOOK.PDF with my model, you can see this in action. And finally ... there are some machine type-models which DON'T have the Bluetooth antenna, or the little indicator light panel with the BT indicator, in them at all. Oh, sure you could buy the parts and install them (if you're brave, reckless, or both), have some shop do it for you, or just use a USB BT dongle.

Some of the customization paths start with a model which DOES NOT have the antenna in it, so you "can't" upgrade it (at least, in my sales channel, I couldn't). I simply limited myself to the "off the shelf" models that had the antenna, and finally decided on one with the CDC that I wanted, so I didn't have to buy one separately. As has been mentioned, the TABOOK is indispensable, because some (many?) of the sales channels don't accurately specify everything about the machine type-model (e.g., 2668-75U) that you're looking at.

B/G is sufficient for most users. 802.11a is really an earlier, corporate high-speed variety ... if you have it, fine, but don't go out of your way to get it unless you know you're using 802.11a somewhere.

Mini-PCI is an internal card. Not to be confused with removeable PC Card/Expresscard slots.

Hope this helps....
