Slow slow slow. Use AVAST antivirus. Its quick and free and stays updated automatically. I had norton on my computer, it was slow. I deleted it and installed AVAST and it found 4 viruses instantly and is much faster. Norton sucks.

A huge drop on performance. To go from NAV2003 to NAV2004 has lower the performance of my laptop greatly.
You can notice this more if you moving files from one partition to another, or when downloading files. This is mainly because now the AV check every file you move among partitions or when downloading, not just at the end of the download, but also every x packets.

But now, who is going to blame Norton? This is supposely designed for maximum protection!
McAffe is (and always has) a less resource drainer than NAV, but it is too easy to deactivate and this has been a problem for me (it shouldn't for most). In terms of quality, both AV are great.
I will test F-Prot v3.15 next week.
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

I've always used Norton AV, and I noticed that it really slows down your system, especially at start-up. I changed to AVG Antivirus. It's free, small, and effective.

Yep, Norton is a certified dog. I couldn't live with the slowdown on my last system (P4 1.4Ghz) but with the P-M, I'll deal with it until my next reformat.

I've known about the 'resource hogging' of Norton, both AntiVirus and System works, but it wasn't until I read the earlier posts on this thread today that I finally decided to do something about it - WOW! The results are totally staggering - I've speeded-up startup by a factor of about 100% (or so it seems) simply by removing Norton and installing AVG.

Thanks for reminding me - I've now 'converted' two laptops and my office system to AVG (ooop's, shouldn't say that too loud) - and not only is the startup is quicker - the scans don't seem to take all day either.

I remember attempting to uninstall an earlier version of NAV and it turned into a real mess. I believe that Norton was using some important dll's. Long story short, I ended up reformatting my HD.

I hope that it is easier to uninstall NAV on a new machine because it will be the first thing to go on my new TP!

I'm using Norton Antivirus Corporate 7.60.something from the year 2000. It seems to use few resources, even with autoprotect turned on.

K. Eng - Symantec Client Security 1.1 (that's a Corporate Version) works great on my T41. Excellent software. I agree with you.

Norton and HP software are the worst pieces of crap to ever be installed on a pc period. I remember the norton utilities fiasco way back on system 8 of the mac os where it tore the os apart and everyone had to reformat. HP software constantly crashes and NEVER works. Even the HP printer software I just installed installs popups on boot that ask you to take a survey. WHAT THE HELL? Had to kill that junk. I have never been able to install any HP software without problems. You can only use the printer driver. The norton programmer and the HP programmer must be the same guy.

I'm running both AVG and Avast on different computers, by way of a test to see which I want to purchase. So far AVG is way ahead. Neither has failed, but AVG is much more invisible. Norton came free on both computers, and was worse than either AVG or Avast.

Maybe, but their performance quirks are directly related to things they do. For instance, Norton, on my computers, scanned the whole Windows directory every time I started up, taking several minutes, and there was no way to stop it. Avast scans programs every time they're opened, whether they need it or not, resulting in delays, even if the program was just scanned two minutes ago. AVG has worked fine, so far, through several months of virus scares, and I imagine the others would have worked as well, in the average. But they do things that irritate me on a daily basis, and AVG doesn't.
