help -> about this T40p

#1 Post by aki » Mon Dec 19, 2005 3:30 pm

Hey,
I'm wondering if some thinkpad gurus think about this T40p is good as a normal t43?:

P M 1.6GHz
512 RAM
80GB HDD
14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD
64MB ATI Fire GL 9000
16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD
Bluetooth/Modem(CDC)
1Gb Ethernet(LOM), 802.11a/b Wireless(MPCI) Secure Chip(TCPA)
UltraNav, 9c battery

AND i wonder if it's possible to change the german-keyboard to swedish keyboard. (the layout are diffrent) :?:

Interesting; certainly, it does well in performance just by looking at the specs. I don't think that there is much difference between the 64MB x300 and the 9000 64MB. I might consider adding another 512MB of RAM to bring it up to 1GB. For the CPU, the speed looks pretty good; I don't think you will notice too much in comparision...But that all depends on what you are going to use it for (Rendering, Math Processing, etc) You can always upgrade later. :)

It's no Centrino. It is better: it has an Atheros chip based wireless adapter. But you can exchange it with an Intel b-card from IBM, when you want a Centrino.

Cost for a new keyboard from IBM: about 35 Euro.

Fan noise: mine had an accelarating fan, so I exchanged it with a M10 Fan (costs: 20 Euro). Since then it is very quiet. But yours might not have this accelarating noise, not every T40p has it.

Might be; it has been noted that many Thinkpads can have the fan do strange things; see http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_fan_noise

I don't think fan noise is much of an issue (A Friend of mine has a T40 and loves it); but you might encounted pulsing. All said, though, there is a very small chance that you might actually get such issues....or even notice them for that matter. :)

i have bought a r40 and that laptop is not the best, my a21e is more solid than r40 :). mobo is half broken, cd driver is near dead and LAN jack 100% dead.

so i hope the t40p is more solid then R40. But wthe price is ok or NOT ok ? 1400$ (USD)

No, this R52 has just 1024x768 resolution and has a 15'' screen. Huge difference to the T40p!

Of course the T40p has a Wirless miniPCI adapter built in, no need for additional USB or PCMCIA adapter.

Check the IBM certified used site - there is currently a model (t40p) with Pentium M 1.6 gigahertz, 512 meg of ram, radeon 9000 w/ 64 meg, xp pro, 40 gig drive, 1400x1050 display, dvd/cdrw combo, 802.11 a/b wireless, gigabit ethernet, 56k modem, 7 day money back guarantee and 90 day warranty...$908 web price (cheaper if you have epp, etc)...sounds like basically the same thing for $500 less (shorter warranty though)....

"Better" is always a very subjective valuation, Aki. Caveat emptor.

Frankly, it only comes with 802.11a/b ? Bleah, at least you ought to get something that has b/g. Also ... US$1400?! That seems steep for a T40. If that's your budget, I'd scout around and see what kind of T42 you could get for that.

I have been using my T40p for 2 years now. That machine is rock solid and dead silent (I got the M10 fan from IBM for free). Just update all drivers.

It is the longest battery running notebook from IBM. I almost had 6.5h on a fresh battery.

$1400 is waaaaay too much. You can get a T42 SXGA+ for that amount.
Why don't wou try the German eBay market. it is the largest in Europe. I got stuff shipped to London without problems.
BTW: I was told that this shop is quite good
www.magicdevices.com

they had a truckload of T40p´s for EUR 1200, with warranty.

Correction:

They have them T40p for EUR 1175,- now

Shipping to Sweden should take 2 days...

I bought a used T40p from Germany (I live in Finland) a month ago - the keyboard layout (button placement) is exactly the same as in Swedish/Finnish kb with only few differences, and it certainly doesn't bother me. Y and Z have changed their places, ü in place of å and few other buttons are different (home, end, del, etc. are in their German form). But they keyboard layout in thinkpads is so terrific that I don't have to look at it at all.

Just follow the auctions and buy it now (sofort kaufen) items in ebay.de and I bet you'll find yourself a T40p with a convenient price. 14" sxga+ display is definetaly worth it compared with an XGA display. Only slight problems came with pre-installed German Windows, but I backuped few files from it and the used install code and installed English version from OEM CD's.
