Buttons don't control external sound when docked
When I dock my T42, the volume buttons (up, down, mute) don't control the external speakers but only the internal speakers. Any way to change this?
T42 2373-3XU - $1840 - She served me well for almost 5 years
T400 on order as of 11/18/09 - $1400 (including Intel SSD) - P8700, 4GB RAM, 80GB X25G2 SSD (I upgraded), 3470 256MB
T420s - loaded, still in use as secondary machine
T440p - loaded, primary

No, not AFAIK. It is a good thing however, because you can use the up/down volume buttons on the keyboard to silence the internal speaker of the laptop without silencing the external speakers on the dock. I've heard though that the mute button works on both the internal and external speakers. This is just what I have read. I do not have a dock myself to confirm.

That's weird. My T43 plus 2878 Mini Dock just started acting the way you WANT it to act. But I DON'T want it to act that way.
Until recently, the volume controls affected only the internal speakers, but not the Mini Dock jack. Which is great, because I can turn off the internal speakers and crank up the external ones. (Hearing the tinny internal speakers mixed with nice external ones sounds awful to me.)
So that's how it used to work. But at some point recently, the volume controls are affecting both external and internal. I just got back from a week out of the office, so I noticed it now. But I'm not sure if it really started just now, or, started a few weeks back when I possibly updated the sound card drivers.
Argh. I will have to experiment and research this.
Do you have the 2878 Mini Dock?

Just tried this for you, as I usually don't use this (all my external speakers have their own volumes).
On my T41 + Mini-dock [287810U], the volume controls buttons only effect the headphone and internal speaker volume, not the external audio. But the Mute button DOES kill all three.
